3rd Trimester

Full term today (and dealing with a bad cold) :(

I've been pretty healthy throughout this pregnancy but of course, my son is back in school right at the end of my pregnancy and bringing home all those wonderful 5 year old germs.  I have an awful cold - runny nose, sore throat, dry mouth, etc - that's making sleep even more impossible than it was before.  I'm planning on a natural birth and could go into labor at any minute, barely able to breath through all this phlegm let alone a contraction. :(

What can I do (that's safe) to at least ease the symptoms so I can get some rest?

  • Not sure, but hope you feel better. There are some colds/flu going around it seems.

  • If your not a fan of meds, you can always try hot soup or tea. Other wise you can always talk to your mw/ob about what over the counter meds are safe!

  • I'm just getting over a bad cold I caught on Sunday. I find that long showers help with the congestion in my sinuses (and in my lungs too).

I tried taking a benedryl on Sunday to clean out my sinuses so I could sleep, but it just made me feel wonky all day and didn't really help with my nose.

Hot compresses on your face help to clear out your nose. Do you have a netti pot? That helps too. Oh, and you can take cough drops and chloresceptic (spelling?) spray for your lungs and throat. I haven't done those, but they're considered safe and may make it easier for you to sleep.

I hope you get better soon!

  • eucalyptus and mint are always good for not feeling good but I don't know how safe eucalyptus is for pregnancy... drinking tea with honey and lemon is always good. Or even some warm broth (chicken especially because of all the nutrients)

  • Oh! and saline spray for your nose is good too

  • Nettie pots are the best way to get rid of congestion fast. It's good to do sick or not sick, but it just clears out your sinuses. I did them throughout the day and right before I went to sleep. It helps if you dont want to take meds.

  • I'm not sure what you can do to stay comfortable, but just wanted to say feel better!

My sister was sick in her 38th week when she was supposed to be induced (she had a huge baby!) and decided to not go through with the inducement because she wanted to feel better first. She waited it out, he decided he was ready to come out the next week, and she was feeling better by then. So all was good! So you may have time, don't worry!

  • Call your OB for guidance but I was sick ALL last week with the sore throat, congestion, runny nose and cough.  My midwife had me take Sudafed during the day, Robatussin prn, and Benadryl at night only to help me sleep.  It worked wonders since the first 4 days I was sick I only took Sudafed.  It helped but was so much better when I added the other stuff to it.  She really wanted me feeling better for delivery (since I was 38 wks then).

  • For your sore throat gargle with salt water. It really helps!

Hope you get better soon, I have the same kind of cold, it really sucks!
