Exosaucer?

Hey!  Do any of you use an exosaucer with your LOs?  I feel like Jacoby really wants to have some independence and is ready to sit up and look at things...grab things, manipulate them and just all out play, but I hate that our only real option at the moment for independent play is with him laying on his back (he does tummy time, but it isn't his favorite...so we don't push it).  He is close to sitting up unassisted, but isn't quite there yet...

I think he would have a blast in an exosaucer...any recommendations for the one you use or any reasons that we should steer clear of using one at all?

 TIA!

  • I don't think they are bad if you only use them for short periods of time. We were warned by our base Educational and Developmental Intervention Services(EDIS) Program that they can be bad for developement if over-used.

Well I wouldn't be concerned about that :)  We really don't leave DS to entertain himself and would definitely not over use it...maybe 15-20 minutes a day...in the same room as us (maybe while I'm cutting things up for dinner or standing over the stove) when it isn't safe for me to wear him.  Right now DH holds him in the kitchen while I do these things so that we can all be together, but I really think he would like to be playing...maybe I'm wrong, but he is just so interested in EVERYTHING right now...and loves to manipulate things :)

We even have a very AP nanny...so I'm definitely not worried about over use.

  • We used an exersaucer for DD starting at about 4 months.  She loved it.  We would never leave her in it for longer than about 30 minutes a day.  It was great because it occupied her when I had something else I needed to do like when we were eating dinner or I had to deal with laundry.

Oh good :)  This is sort of what I envision using it for as well!  It will be especially helpful if DH isn't home yet and I want to get dinner going...b/c knives, hot surfaces and babywearing just don't go...

  • We used the Baby Einstein one with DD from about 4 months.  She love, love, LOVED it in the beginning (and even now she will occasionally want to play with it).  Obviously don't park the baby in there all day, but I'm sure you wouldn't anyway.  :)

  • Yep.  He loves it (talking to the sunshine below @ 4 months).  I couldn't safely cook dinner without it.

Like all things, it's fine in moderation.

  • DD loves it.  I got mine as a hand me down for free, so I keep it in the living room and pretty much just use it if DH and I are eating or if I need to clean the room and she isn't in the mood to be worn.  I also got a jumperoo on Craigs list for $10 and the woman threw in a doorway jumper for free!  So I keep the Jumperoo in the kitchen and the jumper upstairs.  Perfect for when I need to cook or put away laundry and need to set LO down for a few minutes.  Like other people, I only use them when I really need to and LO is in the mood, but I have a LO who is often awake, so they've come in really handy.  Maybe 20-30 minutes per day total between all of them.  I can't see how your ticker for some reason to see your LO's age, but we started the exersaucer around 3.5 months and just started the jumperoo a week ago.  She hasn't figured out the jumping yet though so she basically uses it just like the exersaucer.  Check Craig's List -- great bargains for these sorts of things!

THIS...I can still get maybe 20 min 30 if i'm lucky with LO playing happily in it while I change/fold laundry, throw something together for dinner etc.

  • I can't say enough great things about it. DS loves it more for the physical aspect. He gets nuts jumping around in there. He grew bored of the toys pretty quickly, but I just attach new stuff. Get one 2nd hand, mine was $25 from a kids consignment shop, I saw it at baby's r us for $100!
  • Gavin LOVED his. And he would be in it for several short periods a day - he loved it and it was a safe place to play before he was big enough to get around safely on his own.  He jumped in it like crazy.
