Injecting-you or DH?

I simply cannot bring it upon myself to stick that darn needle in my stomach. I tried tonight and completely freaked and had to have DH do it. I'm scared because tomorrow I am going to an overnight bachelorette party...DH obviously won't be there, I may have to ask a friend to do it. I hope they're willing UGH!!!

Anyone totally NOT able to do this themselves???

Re: Injecting-you or DH?

  • I'm sorry :( the trick is to do it super fast. You won't even feel it. I am one of those ppl who won't let DH near my needles. I guess I don't trust him - ha!

  • It is hard to hurt yourself and even though the subq shots don't hurt we all have a mental image that poking yourself with a needle will hurt.   I really think you can do it and if you just do it quick into your tummy or thigh it is really easy.  FWIW I have been doing all my own subq shots for a few years (for IF and RA), the first couple times are always the hardest.

  • I do my own subq but i just havent been able to bring myself to do the IM myself yet.  But really you can do it!  Just try not to think about what you are doing? i dunno but i bet you can!
  • I have DH do mine because the one time I did it I gave myself a big bruise. DH said that I'm just not as gentle as he is.

  • Trust me.  I completely understand.  I hate needles and have even passed out from having blood drawnStick out tongue.  I wanted DH to do it.  He couldn't bring himself to stick the needle in, he can't even watch when I do it.  So, I was forced to do it myself.  Honestly, it's the mental part that's tough.  Physically, it doesn't hurt.  I took it one day at a time.  It was a huge deal when I gave myself the first injection.  Then I said ok, I have done one, I can do another one.  You really do get used it, unfortunately.  Good luck, hon.

  • I can't do them myself.  DH does it while I whine and cover my face with a blanket.  It actually doesn't even hurt, but I still make a huge production out of it every time.  I'm such a wuss.

  • DH did my first trigger shot because I tried to do it fast and ended up pulling it right back out.  My trick is to pinch some skin and do it slow and steady.  I know it is hard, but once you break over that mental barrier it really isn't so bad.

  • the first one really is the hardest, but only because you think it will be bad. they really weren't bad. I can't even look when they take blood but was able to do my own subq shots. don't get me wrong... I was shaking and sweating up to and even after doing the first one! but in reality... I actually said "that wasn't so bad" after :) good luck and I know you can do! with that said, I dint think I could do the IM shots!
  • Thanks ladies for the encouragment!!! It is TOTALLY all mental, i know. When DH does it, it doesn't even hurt. Such a wuss I am!! I think I am just going to have to suck it up and do it myself!!

  • I had DH do the IM injections but I had to do the subq myself because he was at work.  I had to psyche myself up for a while (I can do this, I can do this, I can do this).  It really isn't that bad at all (especially after having IM injections every night) but your mind plays tricks on you, doesn't it?

  • I started out having my friend, who is a CRNP, do my first trigger shot.  I was absolutely terrified.

Since then, it just got easier.  The last IVF we did,  I ended up doing everything myself, even my POI shots.  Poor DH did give it the old college try a few times , but I found I didn't bruise as easily if I did them myself.  Good Luck with everything!

I'm wearing your necklace every day, BTW  :)  Getting lots of compliments too!

  • I do mine, because I feel like I'm more in control and if it hurts I can only blame myself.  DH does my PIO shots.

  • Me!  I pretty much almost lost it and cried the fist time I had to do it myself.  Of course I also thought the leg would be easier and didn't do it right so I made it hurt so much more than it should have.  Since then i've always made DH do it but there have been a couple of times where he just couldn't get home so I had to do it again.  It wasn't so bad after the first time.  I think I could handle it on my own now but I still make him do it as I feel it brings us closer doing it together and it allows him to be a part of the process.

  • I can't do them myself.  I have a huge phoba of needles and didn't even think that I could handle DH giving the injection, but I let him the first time.  I like the bonding and feeling of trust when he gives the injection.

I just work out my schedules so that we are together, even if it has to happen at friend's home or restuarant, etc.
