NBR: Postman

OK, so I've been having a problem with my postman, but I'm not sure if it really is a problem. Are postmen required to pick up your outgoing mail if you have it? I can't find anything on their site.

We have a mailbox by our door, and I clip the outgoing mail to it. Very often, we won't have any mail delivered that day, and he won't come up to our door to pick up the outgoing mail. Often times this is a outgoing check to pay a bill, so then I have to go to the mailbox and drop it off to make sure it is on time. I'm just not sure if they are required to pick up the mail, and I don't want to complain only to look like an idiot when they tell me they don't have to pick it up.

TIA.

ETA: Just wanted to mention it is VERY obvious when we have outgoing mail, as the clipped mail can be seen from the street.

  • IDK, but he sounds lazy.

  • As long as it has the correct and required postage and it's obvious it's outgoing, then I am pretty sure they have to take it. Call your local post office to ask bc they will know AND they will also know who your local carrier is if you give them your address.

We have a mailbox on the road (which is 20-30 ft from our front door) so our mail carrier pulls up in a truck to deliver. When we have outgoing mail, we put the flag up. If we are receiving a package, they put it on our front steps.

I would say leave him a note, but it doesn't sound like he even bothers coming to your mailbox if he has nothing to drop off; so call in case. Good luck!

  • In the area I live in, they do not pick up the mail door to door, only deliver, unless you have made previous arrangements for them to pick up a package only. There are mail boxes at the corner stores for dropping off mail.

  • Just lurking here, but my parents are mail carriers.  Carriers are REQUIRED to pick up outgoing mail as long as they can see it from their vehicle.  If the mailbox has a flag, it must be raised, if it's a box on the front of your house without a flag, the mail must be clipped to the outside.  As long as it is seen from the street, it's required to be picked up.  The only exception is if you are blocking the mailbox, i.e. your car is parked in front of the box or your porch is blocked and they can't get to the box on your house.

If your outgoing mail is not being picked up you need to call your local station and ask to speak to the station manager and file a complaint.  HTH

  • He is either: a) not paying attention, or b) ignoring it.

Mailmen are required to pick up mail from mail boxes (whether it's one out near the street, or one near your front door-- you pay taxes for this service).  Just call the post office and complain and I'm sure they'll bring it to your mailman's attention.
