Is this safe? (re: bed sharing)

Normally I put DS to sleep in his crib then when he wakes up to nurse, I bring him to our bed for the rest of the night.  I'm normally very aware of our nightwakings.  However, the past couple nights I've had no recollection whatsoever of transferring him to our bed.  I'll wake up around 5 a.m. and be like, how did he get here?  Obviously I'm the one doing it, but it kind of scares me that I'm so unaware of it.  I wonder if it's because he started waking up earlier in the night when I"m still in a super deep sleep.  He used to sleep until 4 or 5 but now he's been waking more frequently.  Does this happen to anyone else?  I'm hoping that since I've recognized this as an issue, I'll be more aware of it tonight...?

  • That's happened to me before and I wondered the same thing. Basically, is it possible to be too tired to bedshare safely? I concluded (for us at least) that it was ok because I was still pulling all the covers down and moving the pillows when I brought her to bed, so I was obviously still aware of what I was doing at some level. But I will be interested to see what others say.

  • It's happened to me a few times as well.  I guess we area all sleep nurturers?  Like sleep walkers, just more cuddly.  I don't know how I could stop myself from doing it anyways, and like PP said I turn the bed into a safe environment when I put LO into it, even though I don't remember it when we wake up later on.
  • You guys do make a good point, he was in a safe spot and I am in the habit of not using a blanket above my waist.  We'll see how tonight goes now that I'm "aware" of not being aware :P

  • Hey!  I don't have anything to offer as far as your question goes :)  But wanted to say that I'm so glad the BGs are working out for you!  We are loving having more FuzziBunz!

And- Your LO is sooo cute!  :-D

  • I'd say that since pillows and blankets are out of the way, it's fairly safe.  But can your LO roll both ways?  How strong?  How fragile?  I've worried less and less over time, as DD's become more able to defend her own needs.

  • I have done this too recently, glad I am not the only one! I woke up thinking 'when did I move her here?' but then she is in a bassinet on the floor beside me so it is not very far to move her.
