I didn't really get much out of the books, I would see if your library has them so you can scan them for extra details. We set DD on the potty whenever she seems like she needs it, and upon waking. We have the baby bjorn little potty, I strongly recommend it.
honestly, don't bother buying a book. You really don't need it. All they say is to watch your LO for signs and they leave you to figure out what those signs are. SO save your money, do what you're doing and when you start looking for those signs, you'll see them. And probably a lot of the time, you'll see the sign, not click, your LO will poo and you'll slap your head and go "oh yeah, must remember that one for next time" and then forget again
So far I've found it best to take DS upon waking but now he's getting a bit bigger I'll often wait and take him mid-feed instead as he's not going right away anymore and he's to hungry to have a relaxed wait on the toilet. If he's feeding and pulls off and grizzles a little, that's a good sign.
