I'm almost out off my pre-natal vit's ,DS is 8mo and still nursing. Anyone still on pre-natals? Or another multi-vit, or nothing while nursing older babies?

Re: nursing mom's 6mo+ & vitamins

  • I still take PNVs daily and also a calcium supplement, as recommended by my OB/GYN.

  • I have been on PNV for over three years now. 3 pregnancies, and nursing since 22 months. I would continue.
  • DS is 8 and a half months, and while I haven't been that good about taking my vitamins, I've been trying to get back in the habit.  My understanding is that the vitamins are more for mama during nursing, because BM will take whatever nutrients it needs no matter what.  Someone recently scared me about the BM taking my calcium, so I want to start taking an extra calcium supplement as well.
  • that's news to me about a calcium supplement. My doc never mentioned it. I eat very healthy, but I'm going to start adding that. thanks!
  • all adults should be taking a multivitamin, and all women should be taking calcium. these were blanket recommendations issued a few years agothat according to all my medical sources still stand. however, you don`t need a specific fancy pnv--generic centrum is fine, and a couple tums a couple times a day for calcium is all you need. :)
  • I never took a specific PNV, just kept taking my multi vitamin and added extra folic acid and calcium.  I stopped (will again this time) the folic acid after the baby is born.  I always take extra calcium.

  • I still take them and my OB said he would recommend any woman of child bearing age to take them. I buy my supermarket brand and get 100 vitamins for like $8. just as good as the expensive ones.
