Alabama Babies

Intro and B'ham Questions

Hi there,

Looks like I will be joining you ladies on this board. DH and I are originally from Montgomery and moved to the DC area after college. Now that we have our daughter, we are moving back home closer to family and to a lower cost of living so I can stay at home with her.

I was wondering if anyone had a real estate agent they could recommend? We are flying home next month and have a pretty small window to look at houses, so I want to go ahead and set that up. Also, any information about good schools in the area would be awesome. I've researched it some, but would love to hear from people who live there.

I'm looking forward to moving back to Bama and chatting with y'all. Fun Fact: DH and I are a "house divided"... I graduated from Bama and he went to Auburn. During the Iron Bowl every year, the smack talk is one of the best parts :D

Re: Intro and B'ham Questions

  • Hi, welcome, and WAR EAGLE!

I'm from Birmingham and we used Geny Mears with LAH as our agent when we bought our house.  She's pretty great.

Pretty much anything Over the Mountain is going to get you a great school system (Homewood, Hoover, Vestavia Hills) but the cost of living is generally pretty high (comparatively) in those areas.  I graduated from Vestavia Hills and it's probably where we will wind up moving to for our DD.

  • Welcome home - well near home!  And Rooooollll Tide! I graduated from Alabama as well.

I live in the Trussville/Clay area, which is east of Birmingham is also nice and has great schools. Trussville has their own school system, however Clay is a part of Jefferson County Schools.

Sorry I don't have any realestate recs for you, but once you settle on an area you want to look in, Realty South is one of the bigger agencies in the area so maybe you can start by calling one of their offices in that area.

    Good luck!

  • Welcome to the board and ROLL TIDE! Although I am not a grad nor do I live in B'ham, I wanted to say hello. I am Amanda from Mobile.
  • Hi, and welcome back to the area!

I also live in the Trussville/Clay area and love it.  I graduated from Trussville schools, and I really recommend them as being a great system with great things going on.

As far as an agent, I really can't help you there.  I agree with Aaliyah above that you might want to check with a Realty South agent.

  • Hi and Welcome!! ROLL TIDE!!!

  • Hello & welcome!  I live in the McCalla area (SW of B'ham) and from what I understand the McAdory school district is supposed to be pretty good as well.  My in-laws live in Trussville and I know their school system is really good.  Good luck house-hunting!

  • Roll tide! Cullman is a great place to live in case that part is up in the air. Cullman is perfectly between Huntsville and BHam. You get the small town, with a good employment ratio and you're just a short drive from some BIG cities! I also love that I65 goes right through Cullman and we have 3 I65 exits so travel is easy peasy! BTW, Welcome home!

  • Hi! :) I live in Hoover, and they have their own school system which is very good.  Hoover does have a higher cost of living (like Vestavia, Homewood, etc)  than going a little further out of Bham, though.

I'll also say, I just graduated with my Masters degree in Elem. Ed,  and spent my time almost entirely in Shelby County Schools (which includes Oak Mtn., from PP). It's where I did my internship, and  I have a lot of classmates who just started working in it this year who are fabulous teachers :). I hope to apply to that system next year after LO comes. It's a good system, and lots of people have migrated to areas in Shelby County like  Helena/Pelham/Alabaster .

This means the commute up north I-65 from those suburbs to downtown Bham is BAD in the mornings, but they are nice areas to live and have a lower cost of living, while still being close. They are a lot more populated now than they were just a few years ago.
