Provider Switch

Has anyone switched providers during their pregnancy?

I am considered switching from a family practice MD to an OB/GYN MD.  I am considered a high risk pregnancy due to pre-existing BP.  I have been monitored by a preinatologist (who I really like) at a clinic specializing in high risk pregnancies.

I'm wondering if it would be better for me to finish out my pregnancy with a dr that specializes in high risk vs a family medicine MD.

Re: Provider Switch

  • I switched from an OB to a mid-wife at 32 weeks.  Best decision I could've made.

If you are considered high risk, I think you should see an OB as opposed to a just an MD.  I am surprised your peri didn't recommend this.  I should add, I feel very strongly about specialists.  I take my child to a pediatrician.  If I have an issue with my skin, I see a dermatologist.   Feet, a podiatrist.  I think they've studied long and hard in their specialty and I like that level of expertise.

    Good luck with your decision!

  • I'm glad you asked about this.  After several attempts to call my doctor and not receiving responses (even after an L&D) visit and talking to her about the situation, I decided tonight I want to change doctors.  I am glad I am not the only one.  How did others handle the situation?
  • i had to switch because we moved when i was 29 weeks along, at the beginning of august.  i had just had an appointment before we moved, so i didn't see my new OB until aug. 24th, and at that appointment, switched again because we decided we wanted to go with the midwives.

i'm going to deliver at mayo clinic, so they have a team of OB's and midwives, and we're not really assigned to anyone in particular. coming from a small practice, i wasn't crazy about the idea at first, but as i'm getting to know how they do things, i'm much more comfortable with it.

the transition itself wasn't difficult at all - once we found out which OBs/MWs our insurance covered and was available for us to use.  my biggest suggestion would be to request hard copies of all your files/tests/etc, so you can simply bring those in and hand them over to your new dr.

  • If you're high risk, I would recommend going with someone who is more well-versed in that kind of situation.  I had unexplained infertility (well, until I miraculously got pregnant!) and had been seeing the only fertility specialist where I live (although we never got so far as testing!).  In any case, I just found out this week that he's closing his practice WELL before LO is born, and he's moving out of state.  So I have been forced to find a new doc!

I've already scheduled an appt. with another OB/GYN, but I am also potentially considering going with a midwife.  We'll see.  I'm higher risk because of my age, so that's kind of leaning me more towards the doc route, but I still have a little time to figure it out.

So, even though I'm not thrilled with the whole changing docs during pregnancy thing, I'm also realizing that it's an awesome opportunity to choose really wisely and find someone I really want to deliver my baby, rather than someone I'm going with because they're the doc I've been seeing!  Good luck!
