Oops, need baptism gift idea

What do you give to friends for their child's baptism?  Our good friends' daughter is being baptized on Sunday and we're attending and then they're having a brunch after.  I forgot until just now that we need to buy a gift so no time to order something cool online.  Thoughts?  Also, how much do you spend?

  • I usually give a book.  My favorite one is You Are Special by Max Lucado.  I actually buy them several at a time so that I have them when I want to give to someone.  Another one is by Sheila Walsh.  If it's a girl the book is called, Gigi, God's Little Princess and if it's a boy it's called, Will, God's Mighty Warrior.  I feel like they already have so much when they're little they don't really need anything.  And since it's a baptism, I like to give something "religious."

  • A savings bond. You can pay $25 for a bond that matures in 17 yrs (I think that's the amnt of time) at $50. Even if you just remembered you can go to your bank and use your SS#  and get a certificate saying that one has been purchased and then they mail you or them the real one in a week or two.

This!  This is what we received from DD's Godfather for her Baptism gift.

  • I usually tend to go the bond route for Christenings as well- (even though from a financial point of view I have a less than great view on them as investments)

  • I like to do one of two things:

A variety of religious books for kids.  You can easily find these at a larger book store like B&N.  The dollar stores in my area often have tons of religious books for kids and of course there are also religious book stores.

Or I like to get ornaments for girls.  Willow Tree makes a number of cute prayer ornaments.  I have personally seen these at some Hallmark Stores and religious book stores. https://willowtree.info/products/ornaments

  • When my son was baptized, we got "On the Night You Were Born" book which I loved, savings bonds/checks, some outfits, a few books that were kid-prayer themed (i.e. A Night-Night Prayer or something like that) and one person gave us a stuffed bunny and talked about it representing new life which I thought was cute.  I have also given a silver cross necklace for a little girl (she'd wear once she was older) and these wooden puzzles that were bible story themed (if you have a Mustard Seed store near you, that is where I got them).

  • I always give a gift of money or a savings bond.  In my family, we put it in a college savings fund.  Due to the gifts he received, we already have a nice amount of money in a college savings account for our DS.  He also received a commemorative plate, a commemorative cup, a children's bible, religious books, a cross, etc. I do not like or think it is appropriate to give toys.  DS godmother (of all people) felt it would be appropriate to give him some munching crocodile toy.  It only confirmed to me that she had no business being DS's godmother because she obviously did not grasp the significance of the occasion.  I am putting my foot down next time on DH's family.
