3rd Trimester

when you are driving to hospital

Some Advice I wish I had gotten before going into labor. Bring a garbage bag or something of the sort in the car with you. I ended up getting sick inside the car with nothing to get sick into.  So there I was having horrible contractions and throwing up between my legs onto the floor in front of me. People mentioned after the fact that throwing up is common in labor, something I never thought would happen to me.  After getting to the hospital I went to the Bathroom and got sick some more.  So be aware ladies, it could happen to you...

  • Thanks for the heads up. Granted I literally live right up the street from the hospital I'll be delivering at, I plan on having a trash bag and a towel (in case my water breaks in the car - or shortly before) in the car now.

  • I know a lot of people who have also brought a towel or shower curtain and sat on it in the car in case their water broke on the way.  Wouldn't ruin their seats.

  • Now this is good advice!  I did take a bucket with me, as I was getting sick before I left... I will do the same this time as well.
  • I got sick when I was in labor with DS too.  I KEEP meaning to get something for that in my car.  Thanks!

    I agree!

We will be taking my car, which is a Honda Element. It has a drain plug and everything in it is "hose-downable." But we already have old towels in there just in case!

  • Good suggestion!  I didn't get sick at all during labor with DD, which surprised me since I was sick with her the whole pregnancy.  I'm the same way this time, so I'm gonna be prepared just in case.  :)

And this is good to know. We're looking to replace H's car and we've been considering an Element (though we haven't actually gone to look at one!)

  • Excellent advice!  I never would've thought of that.

  • Great idea!  Also, a garbage bag on the car seat with a towel on top of it is good protection in case your water breaks (or has already broken).  My sister's water broke at home but the gushing just would not stop so she also used an infant diaper as a "pad" and that helped a lot.

  • That's a good idea!! I will be doing that for sure :)
