NBR LIce??

I am sorry but this really buggs me(no pun intended) Can anyone tell me what your schools policy is on kids with lice, and Is anyone else disturbed by the fact that some schools now have decided not to send kids home for having lice??? I mean seiously all it takes is one shampoo and there gone but whats to say parents are going to take care of the problem if thier kid isnt sent home because of it?? Some parents might just be like yeah ok its not stopping them from going to school so why do anythinf about it??? This really bothers me because then people (like me) who would treat thier kids would be sending them right back to ge the lice again from the kids whose parents never treated it.... Am I the only one who thinks this is crazy???

Re: NBR LIce??

  • I was saying this exact same thing to my MIL just a couple weeks ago.  I would never want my DD to have to walk around with lice living on her so I would end up paying a fortune over and over to treat that nasty stuff.  I think it's disgusting and I can't see how your head itching can not be enough of a distraction to justify being sent home from school for treatment.

  • That's insane!!! I can't help you on school policy, but I did read somewhere that lice hate tea tree oil.  When we had kids at work that had it, we put a few drops into a spray bottle of water and doused our hair every once in a while.  GL!

  • I know in our schools here in this parish, the school nurse has to check your child's head and it has to be nit free (no eggs, nothing live) for the kid to attend class. It was a mess working in the office during a bad break out...yuck.

  • In our schools it USED to be policy that the school would cheak one every couple months and then any kids with lice had to be sent home untill the lice were gone... NOW they have decided to change to policy, and I am going to end up spending a ton of money trying to kepp my kid from running around with lice

  • Most schools have a "no live lice" policy, but studies have shown that a "no nits (eggs)" policy is unnecessary.

I teach third grade, and this is my school's policy.

  • Ugh, thats like not doing anything for a pet having fleas, so that they get to reinfest your pet over and over again. Just as gross, but on kids. And they itch and bite and can cause infections, so there is a medical reason for getting rid of lice, besides not liking bugs living on you or your kids.

  • I work at a school and our policy is no live lice, but nits are acceptable.  I don't love the policy, because a nit can easily hatch into a live bug within minutes of the kid walking into the school, but the policy was changed when lice were causing a huge attendance issue.

We sent our nieces to the school I work in for one year and one of them had lice twice during that year!  It went around like crazy in her kindergarten class.  It was terrible!  Most of the "repeat offenders" have it (and share it) multiple times because their parents think all they have to do is shampoo and forget it.  You actually have to sit for a few hours and pick each nit off each strand of hair in order to really get rid of them for good.  As well as a good washing of bedding; although studies show that isn't all that important.  I learned first-hand where the expression "nit picking" comes from!  NOT FUN AT ALL!
