breaking in woven/ drying a vat?

i have had my cotton indio [purchased new] for a couple of months now and have been braiding it, sitting on it, using it as a blanket, etc. it's getting softer but i think i still have some work to do before the baby gets here.

anyway, i would have preferred to get used wraps so they would already be broken in but i couldn't find a vat naglikti on TBW to save my life so i used POC's recent 20% off and got mine in the mail yesterday. i want to start breaking it in as well and i noticed it says not to machine dry.

is that really the case or can i just dry it on low heat? i don't want to ruin it but i know sometimes those instructions aren't as black and white as they seem. any help would be appreciated :) i can't wait to have the baby home so i can start BW!

Re: breaking in woven/ drying a vat?

  • I noticed the same drying instructions on the brand new Vat I received yesterday (after I dried it on the dryer). You won't ruin your wrap by putting it in the dryer; it may shrink a little, but mine only shrank about 10cm which really isn't all that much. It won't take much to break in your Vat; they are so soft to begin with!

  • thank you, piemaker! it is .5m longer than i wanted anyway so maybe it wouldn't hurt to shrink it a bit.

i got my vat from piece of cloth. if you go to their site and sign up for their emails, they will notify you any time they have discount codes or sales. i waited a while because i really wanted a used one but since the baby is coming soon and they had a 20% off code last week, i decided that was probably the best price i was going to get anyway.

the good thing is they also have free shipping to the us with all orders, so that makes a difference! they are owned by the same people as granola babies. i have ordered from both and they are extremely friendly, helpful, and the shipping is fast. i definitely recommend them if you're in the market for wraps, cloth diapers, etc.

Yeah i have seen that before! How fast is the shipping? Do you know if the code still works, they are kinda $$$ but i know they are worth it. Which one did you go with? I want one that is nice and light, cool, because of the Cali weather.

  • I put my vat (and all my wraps) in the dryer.  That is a great pattern and I struggled with buying it too.  In the end I felt weird wearing whales (I feel like one as it is pp) and I already have one 3.5 vat, hard to justify!!  Enjoy it!

No, the code is no longer valid.  They will not have another like that until into next year, but they will have others from time to time.  You could sign up for emails or like them on fb. ETA, I have a stripped vat in my sig (we were at the beach), very light & airy.

They ship Priority, so 2-3 days. Plus, they are located in So Cal, so you should get it super quick.

ETA: I bought Orkney and I love it so far. The thinnest Vats are the striped ones.

i actually used the code on the last day which was sunday and i got it in the mail wednesday so it's fast. i have ordered diapers from granola babies and it was just as fast. the code was just 20% off 3.5m or shorter so i don't know if that's what you're looking for but definitely just sign up for their email list and i would think they'd have at least a 10 or 15% off deal at some point soon.

the one i got is the naglikti, the blue one with whales. i'd been wanting it since the first day i decided i would use wovens and i kept putting it off until now. also check on the FSOT because you never know what's going to show up and you could get a good deal on a vat or something similar :)

  • I haven't put my vat in the dryer, but I did fluff it on no heat with dryer balls to beat it up and soften it a bit.  It was a tad crunchy after line drying, but not as much as some other wraps. I bought mine new, and it barely needed any breaking in.

In case the issue is that you just don't know where you would hang 15 feet of wrap (which was my thought at the start), I saw this cool idea for it.  If you get a bunch of pants hangers, the kind with the 2 clips, you can attach them to the side of the wrap and kind of accordion it.  Then I just hung the whole thing on my shower rod.  It worked great!  Vats are so thin that it dried pretty quickly.
