Pregnant after a Loss

Talk to me about condoms.

I'm off pelvic rest in a week (total 3 weeks) and DH is ready to go...  I told him the stipulation is that he has to wear a condom, I just don't think having extra "stuff" near my cervix is a good idea.  He's okay with it, but we are CLUELESS.

We haven't used them in 10 years, since our first time.  In the 11 years we've had sex, we've used 3 condoms.  (I was on BCP for a little while, then we used the pull out method until we got married.  Yeah, I'm totally infertile.)

What are good ones?  What should we avoid?  Lubricated vs. Unlubricated.

I feel like a virgin again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Talk to me about condoms.

  • Did your doctor tell you to use condoms? I don't think the irritation from the latex would be any better at this stage of the game.

Also, I loath them and would only use them if I had no other choice. And I mean NO other choice.

  • We weren't*  allowed to have sex when I was on pelvic rest. If your dr okays it then I would get the lubricated kind. We personally like the one that make ya tingly. Not the her-pleasure ones though.

On a side note. I hate condoms, but I'd rather wear them because the smell of his boys make me gag. lol

I agree with this. They irritate my ladies parts and would think condoms would be worse than your DH's stuff.

  • I'd call your doc and see what he/she says.  They have more experience with this and would be able to tell you if free swimmers are okay or if they need to be corralled.

No.  I just really don't like the thought of sperm being so close to my cervix, for the fear of irritation and infection.  You're probably right about the irritation from latex, although I get latex weekly by form of dildo cam.  Grrrr.... I feel like there's no win.  This is me and my crazy.

Don't bother with the spermicide, you don't need it. (And it gives me infections.)

  • I don't know why sperm would cause an infection.  Unless you are not using the bathroom after sex?  I really think it would be fine to not use a condom or just have him pull out, that way you aren't using condoms or getting sperm?
DD(9)DD(5.5)DS(3)DS(born 2/1/11) July 2006, lost a baby at 8 weeks, natural miscarriage , May 2009 lost Zoe Eliana at 17 weeks no reason known, possible under developed organs. • Also, without going into too much detail.  When they are using latex for the internal u/s they just put it in and get the u/s.  If you are using a condom for other purposes, there is more happening, thus causing more irritation.

  • We've been on pelvic rest since June. :-( My poor husband. LoL I wish I could help but I hate condoms, and haven't used one in 6 years. I would have to say lubricated sounds like a good choice, also run it by your Dr.

  • Do his sperm play in the dirt a lot and forget to wash their hands?

ANY sex is going to give you a risk of infection, raincoated or no.  For real.  It's not about sperm, it's about a foreign object penetrating the vagina, so include fingers & toys too.

If you're on true pelvic rest, chances are good your doc doesn't want ANYTHING in there, whether it's gloved or not, unless the doc's putting it in there himself.

  • Thanks, ladies.  I guess I'm just being extra cautious.  I have a $50,000 cervix due to my surgery and I don't want to do anythign to mess it up.  The surgeon said sex is fine after the 3 weeks is up, I was just trying to make it even more sterile.

I do go to the bathroom immediately after, and no, he doesn't have dirty sperm, but I am just paranoid. about. everything. as I'm sure some of you can understand.  My danger zone window is coming up and I'm kinda freaking.

Thanks for the advice.  I have an appt next Tues with my OB and I'll ask her then.  I have a week to think about this.

  • I totally get the paranoia about getting an infection. My RE actually said semen will increase chances of BV, so unless we're cycling we should use protection. Of course I'm super prone to BV though. So it may not apply to ya.

  • If you are seriously that concerned about infection, I'd just stay on voluntary pelvic rest and either get handsy our mouthy with it.

  • If you are ok'd and really want to use a condom, naturalamb is a good brand. I have latex allergies so DH and I have always used other forms of BC until after Nicholas. Honestly liked them just fine, they kinda smell funny b/c of the lube but they were really good.
