Halloween costume for an infant?

I wasn't thinking about a Halloween costume for Evan because he will be in bed by 8:00. And the few I saw at Target looked pretty warm. I think they were created for parts of the country where it is actually chilly for Halloween.

Yesterday DH was asking what we will dress Evan as. He looked disappointed when I said I wasn't planning on doing anything.

So, did you (or will you) dress up your infant for Halloween. And if you answer "yes," did you make or buy a costume?

Re: Halloween costume for an infant?

  • DD was 3 months old for her first Halloween. We dressed her up as a flower. We got her costume at Babies-R-Us.  It was a super hot costume, but we didn't take her trick-or-treating so it really didn't matter.  She just wore it for some pictures and we took it to daycare with her and they dressed them up and put them in the pumpkin patch.

  • DS was about the same age last year and I did do a costume.  I made it - it was Superman.  My niece's b-day is the 30th, though, so we had a costume party to go to to show it off.  He went to bed after the party, so we did not go ToTing in it.  We also went to a kid's costume partythe weekend before in it.  It would be cute just to take pictures in.
  • DS was about the same age last year too.  I hadn't planned on getting him a costume either but DH really wanted one.  I ended up buying him a little dragon at Carter's.  I bought it close to Halloween so it was pretty cheap.  It was kind of warm too but I think the weather was ok that he wasn't too hot wearing it.  We actually ended up going to a party, wearing it to daycare, getting together with my nieces and nephews for pictures and went to another friends house for ToTing with her older child so we ended up getting some good use out of it.

This year I have no idea what we will do!

  • You should look at the wild things collection on babygap.com  It's super cute and you can reuse everything.

  • Travis is going to be a monkey!  We just got him the costume at Old Navy last weekend.  It is two pieces - pants and a jacket - both fleece material.  It doesn't look AS hot as some of the others I've seen.  I like that it is velcro on the front, so it will be easy to slip off to put him in the carseat and then put the jacket part back on when we get to our destination.

Old Navy was pretty much out of all of the smaller size costumes, but they are only $17 (I paid $12 with a 30% off coupon).  I saw some cute ones at Carters and Macy's (Carters brand too).  We went to the Halloween store and costumes there were like $60 and the cute ones were too big for DS.

I thought those were ADORABLE too...until i saw them in the store.  The hat and booties are a different material AND color from the one-piece sleeper.  Some of the patterns were better than others, like the pig, but for the price I was way dissapointed.

  • Giraffe costume from Walmart.  It was super cute, felt like footed PJs with a hoodie.  It wasn't super warm at all.  And it was $8.

  • Yes, DD will be a butterfly and it's mostly for pictures I'm sure. I also got her a little Halloween dress for during the day and jammies for at night. Over the top? Yes, but it's her first Halloween and I'm getting into it.

I bought it all because I'm not crafty or creative enough to make one for her. My own costumes always boring and are purchased as well. Just not creative with Halloween...

  • I bought a baby chef costume online for~$16.
  • Eloise was a fairy for her first halloween (6mo). Just a white onesie with flowers sewn on that she wore as a regular shirt, plus a tutu I made and she still wears to play dressup 3 years later.

Samuel was a cat last year - at 5 days old. Just a knit cat hat and wrapped him in a black blanket. This year he'll be a monkey with a knit monkey hat and some regular brown clothes.

I always "make" the costumes, but not from scratch, just by modifying regular clothes. Like using sticky-backed felt cut out to make a different colored belly (pink on a white shirt for a rabbit, tan on a brown shirt for a monkey). Last year E was a cat too and wore all black clothes, a feather boa tied to an adult sized headband made her tail, painted face and the cat hat. Then they wore the cat hats as their winter hats.

  • Abby was around that age and she was a ballerina but I just made a tutu and threw it over a onesie.

Some places have cute jammies that look like costumes but can be used again.

  • I love the jammie idea. And I will check out WalMart.  Thanks for all of the ideas!
