Mirena IUD - cost/ultrasound?

Hi everyone....so AF finally showed up this week. Boo. I was hoping it would hold off until 2011 when I might have new insurance that covers IUDs.  I used a Mirena IUD before getting pregnant and loved the lack of AF.  My OB/GYN who delivered LO insists on doing an ultrasound when she places an IUD.  I didn't have this done with my original one, but also hadn't given birth before. The ultrasound makes the cost go from a reasonable few hundred dollars to close to a thousand.

If you've gotten an IUD after childbirth, did your GYN do an ultrasound? What was the cost (with our without ultrasound)?

Thanks! Weird to think it's been nearly 2 years since my last cycle!

Re: Mirena IUD - cost/ultrasound?

  • I had mine put in 8ish weeks post-partum, OB did NOT do an ultrasound. It cost me like $94 (that was my portion, not sure what the total out of pocket would have been without insurance).

  • Almost anyone will place an IUD and Mirena even has a month by month payment plan on their website somewhere.

  • My little sister tried getting an IUD after she had her second.  They did require an US.  The cost was covered by her insurance.  The reason they require the US is that the uterus can become softer after having a baby and the IUD could be placed in the abdomen in error. Despite having the US while my sister was getting hers done, it was still misplaced and she ended up having emergency surgery to get it removed.

  • No ultrasound here. Can you go to another OB for it? Like PP, a NP put mine in. They did a pregnancy test before and then I came back a few weeks later to check on it since they noticed I have a small uterus. I was freaking out so she gave me another pregnacy test that day. All together, $25 through insurance.
  • No ultrasound here.  Sorry, I don't know the cost because insurance paid for the whole thing.  I do remember my doctor saying that at one year it would be equal to the cost of one year of birth control pills.

  • They did not do an ultrasound at placement, but when I thought I was having problems with it, the did an u/s, which was covered by a co-pay.

DH works for a Catholic hospital though, so our insurance covers NO birth control at all, unless there is a medical reason for the life of the mother.  So we had to pay it all OOP.  It was $1275, but since we paid it all upfront, they gave us a discount and we ended up paying $775.
