Can I give anything for cough/sneezing/running nose/congestion?

When DD was younger I know it was just Vicks Babyrub, humidifier, nurse suggested holding her in front of freezer to calm cough, etc.  I thought once she was 2 I could give her something but I am not having any luck.  I have a call to the pedi but they haven't returned it yet, DD isn't liking me being on the pc so I haven't had any luck googling (other than lots of stuff for 4+ and 6+)  DD hasn't been sleeping the last two nights or taking her usual 2-4hr nap because she is constantly coughing, sneezing, etc.  Today her nose started to run also.  She hasn't had a fever at all.  Any advice of suggestions?

  • Someone posted something similar a few days ago...and overwhelming response is that you can't really give anything until age 4 or 6 or something. I use homeopathic stuff made by Hylands (Cold 'n Cough 4 Kids) that is approved for ages 2 and up. I also had luck using the Icy Hot Vapor Rub for Kids also approved for ages 2 and up.

Good luck...sick kids are no fun.

  • I will have to  check out a Walgreens for something.  I think that is where I have gotten Hylands products before.  I kind of recall hearing something in the last year or so about switching from 2 to 4 for cold meds.  I was told before that they used to give it to infants/babies but then switched to 2 because people were ODing their kids accidentally.

That being said I really really wish the search feature on this website worked consistantly!  It is down more often than it works :-(

  •  I am giving my son sudafed, there are dosing instructions for 2 year olds on the bottle. My pedi suggested it and he is getting some relief from it

  • We generally give Benadryl with either ibuprofen or Tylenol (generic) if he is actually sick. If it's just an allergy-related runny nose, we'll give Zyrtec.

  • My Pedi's website says that a teaspoon of honey can help with cough.  I used it the other night for my DS and it helped him sleep (am me sleep).  I didn't think he'd swallow it, but I used a syringe and he didn't seem to mind it. GL

  • DD was just sick last week with the same thing. We did the following before bedtime for 2 nights:    long warm bath in Johnson & Johnson's Vapor bath. Her nose drained while in the bath. Then we gave her Benadryl (which not all peds recommend anymore), once she feel asleep for the night we put the 'little noses' saline drops in her nose to help keep things loose. We elevated her head and put a warm air vaporizer in her room with the vicks "vapo steam" in the water. She slept all night both nights. hope your little one starts feeling better :)

  • Is it  a cold or is there a chance it is allergies?

You could try benadryl before bedtime or we do give DS Children's claritin (generic) daily for his allergies. If his allergies flare up too much, he has asthma problems as well.
