So that's why my response wasn't posting. But seriously -- the pile on was totally unnecessary.
I can
count the number of "prenatal vitamins" I've taken in my life -- they
make me SO SICK. My doc said forget it and take folic acid (pill the
size of a sudafed) and flintstones and that's what I did all through my
pregnancy. But it's a lot less important now than it was when you were
TTC and in first tri during all the organ developments. The chances
that something will be wrong with your baby because you skip a day or a
few days is.... slim, to say the least.
If you have
fortified cereal (like Total) you're pretty much doing the same thing.
The important thing is to get the vitamins, whether it's from your diet
or from a pill. It's not an antibiotic or a birth control pill which
must be taken daily and absolutely on time. In fact, you can overdose
on certain minerals and vitamins (this is why I was getting sick). Zinc
and iron and vitamin A can be especially hard on your system. (Which is
why you should never take Airborne when pregnant -- the levels of
vitamin A can actually be poisonous!)
I eat a ton of veggies
and I've been mainlining milk (fortified with vitamin D) and pasta
(fortified with folate) for the past nine months, so I'm not worried if
I miss a day.
Seriously, folate (folic acid) is an absolute
must, and you can take as much of it as you want, too, since it's water
soluble and you'll pee any extra out -- especially in the beginning of
your pregnancy. They have proved that people who supplement their folic
acid intake have a lower percentage of neural tube defects. But if you
skip your vitamins or if you buy regular vitamins rather than
prescription pre-natal, or if you don't take DHA at all (my doc said since I eat
seafood it was unimportant), it's not going to kill you or hurt you
baby.

yea, the fetal brain development is mostly at the end of pregnancy...you need your vitamins...whether they are prenatal or flintstones, take something!

Well that's not entirely true about the DHA. The American/westernized diet is notoriously low in DHA. It's really recommended to get 300 mg of DHA daily when pregnant. You'd have to be eating a ton of seafood to get this amount, and then you'd have to deal with mercury.

Yes. You did what you could, that worked for you. I know plenty of women who got sick with prenatals, and ended up taking DHA supplements, along with a Folic supplement, and Flinstones.
The OB in those cases is OK because they are taking SOMETHING. It's better than nothing.
I was simply asking the question to see if any moms to be out there could relate to my little confession. I wasn't posting to be ganged up on like some high school *** fight. The ladies who respond to these posts are nothing but snarky and bored women who have nothing better to do but rip other people to feed their own nasty behaviors. I feel 100% sorry for all of you, especially your husbands/significant others. Even more so your children. Best of luck in your pregnancies, and don't forget to take your prenatals.
Oh, PS, if your looking for some fresh meat to pick on, try first tri, or even better, TTC..

I didn't read your post, but I'm sure I would have agreed with you. I take OTC vitamins because the Rx ones went up to $35 a month. However, whining does not help. It just makes you look ridiculous.

Sooo.... you posted because you wanted responses that were more along the lines of "go you!". When you received real opinions you got your panties in a wad like a child, took your ball and went home?

Darling, I hate to say it, but this was NOTHING. We were simply telling you to either take your vitamins, or not!
Thank you for your kindness and pity towards our families. It's very much appreciated. Very interesting how it was the only thing you could think of.

You have a grand total of 59 posts, you are indeed, fresh meat. but I wasn't flaming you, I was saying take your vitamins. They are necessary all the way through pregnancy and even after if you're BF'ing. It's not hard.

I really want to know where ALL of the newbies get this same line. Really, it's amazing they all say the same exact thing.

Thank you for this. My DS is sick, I've been having on and off contractions for the past couple of days, and DH is gone traveling. I really needed this entertainment!

I love my prenatals and recommend them to anyone who doesnt like taking huge honking horse pills (my prescription ones made me throw up within a few minutes of taking them). At Target they have VitaFusion brand prenatal, DHA, and Folic Acid Gummy vitamins that are so f-ing awesome, and I totally owe the Bumpie that posted about them a few months ago, because this is like eating gummy bears with sugar coating, and they dont taste nasty like the flintstones gummies do. You may need to take something for calcium (I pop Tums like candy anyway for heartburn) and iron, but DHA and Folic acid and other Omega-3s are included, including vit A, C, D, E, etc.

There's a difference between having an issue that is preventing you from taking prenatals and consulting your doctor to make sure you are getting what you need through other options and just being too damn lazy to care about taking a pill. The original post was NOT about getting sick from prenatals, it was about looking for reassurance that it's ok to consistently "forget". So yes, you should get flamed. If you can't make the freakin effort for your unborn baby now, what are you going to do when it's born? It's about to get a lot more challenging than taking a pill every day....
Re: wow...a DD on the prenatals post?
Dude, that WAS quick! I was about to re-post in reply to another poster in there who said she didn't take her vits either, and her OB didn't care.
What an idiotic reason to DD.
