(NBR) Any IT people out there?

My personal email account, which I've had for about 12 years, is sending spam out.  The email has no subject, is a link, and I think it goes to a porn site from what people are telling me.  I ran my antivirus program as well as a spyware program a friend sent me.  Laptop is coming back clean.  What do I do?  Change my password?  Contact the email account help line?  Suck it up and cancel the account?  I already deleted all my contacts after exporting the list so if it tries to do it again my address book is blank...

Could it be my blackberry?  Ugh I hate hassels like this.

TIA for any help!

  • I am no expert but I am getting these types of emails from 3 friends and it is really annoying. One is closing her yahoo account but the other two aren't doing anything. I think even if you close your account, the emails will still be sent out but that is not for sure. I hope someone can help you with this, how embarrassing.

  • Loading the player...
  • Contact the email administrator.
  • If you've run both antivirus and spyware (the most up to date versions) and they come back clean, it sounds like your account was hacked.  Try changing your password and see if it still occurs.

Also, you may want to run a malware program in addition to what you already did just to make sure you don't have any "hidden" malicious applications running.

  • This has been happening to some of my friends as well. I get an email from them and it comes with a link which I do not open.  They are all on facebook so I wonder if that has something to do with it?  I know that people have been getting viruses and other problems with people hacking into their accounts.  This is just a guess, not really sure what else it could be.
  • Change your password on your email account and also put a password on your computer. I had that happen to me and doing both stopped the spam.

  • Changing your password is the fastest way to fix this type of hack into your account.

Generally, what you're describing is a hack of a specific account, not an entire system hack. (That would by why your spyware scans and whatnot are coming back clean.)

In my experience, getting in touch with the administrator for accounts like yahoo, msn, gmail, ymail, etc will be of no help for this type of issue.

  • Thx everyone.  It is WICKED embarrassing, it went to every single person I've ever emailed that was saved as a contact.  Hopefully most people have their spam settings up so it'd just go directly in the trash.  I'm leaning toward just cancelling the account.  I ran malware and spyware programs and they came back clean.  This stuff makes me so paranoid!
  • you don't need an IT person for this. Just change your password because there's a lot of 'phishing' and spamming going on lately. It sucks, I know!
