POLL: Do you underestimate your kids? My example:

I think sometimes I forget how smart and capable they are.

DH and I were totally worried about sending them back to school today after they were out for 6 weeks.

DH dropped them off  and all the kids ran up to them and they got tons of hugs! And the boys were thrilled and laughing and off they went. Not ONE tear.

DH and I feel stupid!

  • That's really sweet!  I'm glad they had such a good reunion.

I do underestimate.  My cousin was over the other day, and she told my little boy to get dressed.  I said "oh, he can't dress himself."  She says, "yes he can."  She hands him a shirt and tells him to put it on.  2 minutes later, he is wearing the shirt.

  • of course!  I don't think that's a bad thing though - I think as a mom, you're supposed to over-worry about your kids - it shows you love them!

Witness my mom - who still wants me to call her when I get off a plane!  Its kinda goofy, but she worries. . . and it makes her feel better when she knows I'm OK.

  • Same here about the dressing/undressing.  No mommy I can do it myself!  To them telling me I need to slow down or I'll get a ticket!  (no I don't speed).  They learn so much every day.

  • So true.

Yesterday Will and I were playing outside.  It was a bit chilly and I was barefoot so I said I wanted to go in because my feet were cold.  He turns to me and says, "Mama, shoes on!"  Ok, ok, ok.

I'll get a note from school saying that today she did such-and-such, and I am blown away that a) they thought she could do it, and b) she did it! Cutting with scissors, opening jars, sitting still for 15 minutes while they read chapter books to her, putting eyes where they belong on a face... a regular rocket scientist, and I had no idea!

Glad the boys reunion went well. Even more glad the cast is off!

My mom has me do the same thing, I call her when I get on the plane and when I get off the plane!

  • I do about some things. She moved to a new DC a few weeks ago and they sleep on cots instead of cribs. I was really worried, but day 1, she slept 1.5 hours and has been fine!
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut

My mom does the same thing. Guess I'll be doing that when Camryn gets older!
