Shingles?

I found out last night that I've been indirectly exposed to shingles.  A woman at work has them.  Fortunately, last week, when I was supposed to work with her, I had some nasty BH and we decided I should stay home and someone else went in for me.  I keep my hands washed and/or sanitized... I'm actually pretty anal about the hand washing these days (I work with kids).

I've had chicken pox and the other woman who has had contact with her had had chicken pox and shingles.  Is there anything that I should be doing here?  I will talk to my doc this afternoon, but I'm curious to find out if anyone else has been exposed and if there is anything you did to avoid.

Re: Shingles?

  • You can get shingles if you've had chicken pox. Your doctor can test your blood for immunity and prescribe you an antiviral if need be.

  • I just called my doc with this question 2 weeks ago as my BIL stayed with us and was diagnosed with it the next day.  She said as long as I have had chicken pox I should be fine.  It only causes exposure problems to people who haven't had it and apparently shingles can sit dormant in your nerve cells forever and you never have an outbreak.  You and baby should be fine, but you can always call the office to mention it if you would feel better.
  • My mom found out she had shingles 2 weeks ago. I was so worried I would go into labour early and she wouldn't even be able to be there. She said something about reading how babies can catch in invitro but that was also on the wonderful world wide web full of many tales and fables! haha. I would check with your dr.

  • Unless you touched one of her open, oozing lesions you'll be fine. If you're concerned at all though, bring it up with your physician.

  • Shingles isn't contagious unless you actually touch the rash, so you're fine.
