A couple more thyroid questions

Okay, I know this is not the thyroid help board but you guys had good answers for me the other day and I have a few more questions. And I am hypothyroid due to postpartum!

Here is my info. Went to Dr with complaints of fatigue, weight gain and just not feeling right. I've gained 10-12 lbs while training for a 1/2 marathon, eating well and breast feeding (kind of). After some tests found that tsh was 329 and T4 was undetectable (<0.10). Dr. perscribed me with 125 mg of levothyroxine. I have been on it for 2 days.

Breastfeeding was great till month four when the symptoms started, then milk supply decreased and DD is getting one formula bottle a day and pumping rarely works. My questions:

1. Might my breastfeeding experience improve again with treatment?

2. Will I lose that 10-12 lbs? After looking on line a little it looks like I could gain more!

3. Any idea when some of the other symptoms will start to go away (especially fatigue)?

4. Looks like this could possibly go away after a while since it's probably pregnancy related. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks! I will try to stop posting this stuff here!

Re: A couple more thyroid questions

  • 1. i have no clue since I went through this way before i got pregnant

    2. Once you are leveled out, there should be no reason you would gain weight as long as you're eating healthy/exercising.

    3. I think it will take a few weeks or a little longer to feel the full effects. Since you're just starting out your dose may need to be adjusted and then you'll have to give that time before you feel totally normal. I was upped to 200 mcg, and it took them increasing it in increments of 25 each doctor visit, so it was 3 blood tests before they got it right.

     4. It may or may not go away. I work with a woman who is still on synthroid even though she delivered 2 years ago.

This! And...I hope you'll be able to increase your supply. Try taking more milk plus pills (whole foods has them), drinking mother's milk tea, drinking water, pumping between feedings, etc....hopefully that will help! Good luck and i hope you start feeling better soon.

  • My thyroid crashed after my pregnancy and I am taking Synthroid. However, my experience is a little bit different since I had thyroid problems pre-pregnancy. ?

    ?

    1. Yes, I believe getting your thyroid level under control should help your milk supply. It did me. i still have to supplement a little formula, but I went for several months before getting dx, so I think my body is just trained to make less milk.?

    2. ?I'm not sure if you will lose the weight just by starting medication. You are taking your metabolism from slow (underactive thyroid) to normal. But it should stop the weight gain.?

    3. My doc says it takes six weeks to see the full effect of medication -- and that is why he waits six weeks from starting a dose. Tell your doc if you don't feel better. Sometimes your numbers can be technically normal, but not optimal for you. ?

    4. I understand in many cases thyroid function returns to normal, but some women do develop long term hypothyoidism.

  • Once your levels are fine, breastfeeding should get better, but do whatever you possibly can now to keep your supply up as much as possible.  Generally, it takes a while for it to increase regardless - pumping may not work to get milk but it helps with milk production and nurse as much as you can.

You probably won't lose that 10-12lbs just from having your levels back to normal (it sucks).  I put on about 6lbs before I was diagnosed and it took me forever to get lose it.  The problem is that if your thyroid doesn't work at all, the synthroid regulates your metabolism, so typical things that make people lose weight (i.e. increasing your muscle mass, working out) don't necessarily work the same for us.  You *can* lose weight while being hypo but it might take time and some experimenting with what foods will work and what exercise will work.  That said, if you are training for a half, I'm sure you'll lose it from running so much.

The meds will take a few weeks to kick in, but you should start feeling a little better within a week or two.

And I have no idea - sometimes people get diagnosed during pregnancy and then it goes away.  You might want to find out the cause - do you have hashimoto's?  If you're body is attacking your thyroid, chances are you'll be on meds for good.  It's really not a big deal though.
