Bring both, some places will show you how to adjust the straps and stuff on the seat too. As for cost it just depends on where you go. The place I took mine asked for a ten dollar safe kids.org donation per seat.
hopeful, how did you find a place to do the installation? I was thinking about just doing it myself and having the fire dept. check it (they have folks there that do checks for safety).
Call your local fire or police station and they should be able to tell you who can install it. In my town they only do it once a month on a Friday and its like two firemen that do it.
Make sure they teach you how to install it; that they don't just do it for you and send you on your way. You MUST know how to do it yourself. The techs are there to teach you and to check it after you do it. Also, just because there's a firefighter or officer around, do not assume they know what they are doing. Make sure you ask for a certified tech when you call to schedule.

Take both the base and the seat.
This. Exactly. I am a Certified Passenger Safety Tech, and learning how to do it yourself is a MUST. Also, call the hospital where you will be delivering to see if they have CPS techs also. This way you'll be able to fit your newborn to the seat, not just the seat to the car. That's why I got certified (I work as an RN on a Maternity floor).
