considering breastfeeding? (from a new mom)

My babe is a month old now, and I just wanted to pop back into the 3rd tri to say that breastfeeding is freaking awesome. Super convenient, very sweet, and (obviously) provides perfect nutrition for baby. I'm back to my prepregnancy weight already, probably somewhat due to BFing.

I'm posting this because I was a girl that was not particularly thrilled with being pregnant (didn't find it very fascinating or heartwarming) but breastfeeding is just the coolest thing I've every done. I hope everyone that wants to try it can be successful; GL!

I am going to try it. I am a little freaked out about it though. Not sure why. I BF'd my daughter for about 2 months but I found it difficult. Of course that was 20 years ago. I hope now that I am older, I will have more patience. I know I am more educated. I am glad to hear of your success!

BFing was VERY difficult for me but DS finally got the hang of it (after 6 weeks of tears and frustration). We ended up BFing for 2 years and it was totally worth it - I can't wait to do it again.

Agree. I'm constantly bombarded with people telling me it sucks or is ridiculously hard/painful and that I should just FF to begin with. I realize it's probably going to have it's challenges (especially with twins) but it's refreshing to hear someone say they actually like it. Gives me some hope.

Thanks for posting this. I BF DS for 16 months, and I plan to BF again for up to a year this time. The first two weeks were hard on my nipples due to latching issues and cracking, but it got a lot better after that (the LC was a big help). I'm glad i didn't give up.

What a bunch of b*tches telling you to not even try. Sorry to hear that you're being discouraged. I must say, I think it sucks, but so does not sleeping much and changing HUGE poop diapers, but it is all a part of the game and at the end of the day- you LOVE it because you love LO. Good luck

Yeah nice, eh? A lot of people I come into contact with can't believe I'm going to try to BF twins. The majority of our close friends/family are supportive but I've had more than a few people look at me like I'm a complete psycho b/c I'm not FF'ing from the get-go. I'm giving BF'ing my all and intend to use all my resources (LC and community RN's) I have nothing against FF'ing at all, but with 2 mouths to feed on a mat leave reduced budget -- hello I'd like to feed my kids the free stuff for at least awhile!

Its only my 2nd day and it is hard and a challenge but i love being the sole provider of nutrition for my LO and its a great bonding experience. Anything worth having you have to work for!

I'm also only on day 2 of this and today was so cool. My milk is coming in and my daughter already seems to know. I'm still in the hospital and when they brought her to me earlier today and I put her in feeding position, she REACHED to me (well, with her lips) because she knew what was coming. It was the coolest most natural thing! I know DD and I may have a short rocky path ahead, but I also hope we both continue to think it's awesome so we can make it through. Oh, I should also add that DH is way more interested in it than I thought he'd be. I've been having (normal) trouble moving and he became part of the process wrying to keep her awake and encoraging his "baby girl". It was so awesome! Oh crap, here come the hormones bringin' on the waterworks just typing about it!

That is so great!

I loved BFing too. It was easy from the start for us despite my DD being a 35w preemie. We were so lucky.

My ONLY complaint was trying to get back into my workout routine. I had to wear two sports bras and would often drench myself. I had an over-supply issue that was uncomfortable for work-outs and once my DD started STTN. But since that is my only complaint I consider myself incredibly lucky .

i was reading through your posts and i just have to say, i know a girl who breastfed triplets for 6 months, she enjoyed it very much and although she said it was hard, it was also worth it. I think its great you want to breastfeed your twins, i hope it goes great for you! dont listen to the negative people who say to formula feed (there is nothing wrong with formula though, my first was FF)..i love breastfeeding

I just want to chime in and say that it's ok if you don't think breastfeeding in the first month is super awesome. I hated it at first. It was hard and my nipples hurt and I was leaking everywhere and it just sucked. But it gets so much better and easier after the first 4-6 weeks and I'm so happy that I continued to nurse my daughter. It ended up being a wonderful experience for us.

So even if you don't have the OP's experience at first, hang in there! It gets better.

This. I don't get the whole "oh, pregnancy, this magical experience" stuff. (Didn't help I was sick as a dog for the first four months!) But I am looking forward to breastfeeding. Go figure.

Actually, until I got pregnant and started reading the books, I didn't realize that EVERYONE didn't breastfeed. I thought formula was for older babies, like baby food is, or for moms with medical difficulties or adopted babies. I thought everyone just breastfed -- my mom did. My MIL likes to joke she breastfed until the kids went to first grade. Actually, I'm not sure that's a joke.

Also, the moment I got pregnant, my nipples changed to look like -- well, like something on the end of a bottle. That's actually how I first suspected I was pregnant. So I'm actually not so stressed about breastfeeding. All the equipment appears to be in working order. ;-)

There's a lot more to breastfeeding than the shape of your nipple. I just don't want to see you get discouraged if it's hard at first. Most breastfeeding problems can be worked out with the right help and with patience. Good luck. Smile

I loved BFing the first time around and can't wait to do it again!! To counteract some of the horror stories for you ladies mine's another good one! I had no trouble at all. I know I was really lucky and I hope I am again. But DD latched with no problem and we just fell right into it and she weened on her own at 17 months! Wishing all of you an easy enjoyable BFing experience!
