Anyone have the secret to cleaning burp cloths?

We came home after a trip to a smell in DS room. It was the clean burp cloths in his room. I am throwing them away and buying new ones. (just use gerber cloth diapers) They get yellow and smelly after a while.

I have tried bleach and soaking in oxy clean. Is there something I am missing or is it just a throw away and get new ones thing?

  • That's odd. After going through two kids, ours are totally stained, but they go through the washing machine and there's no odor at all. Could it be your detergent?

  • I used cloth diapers as burp cloths and I didn't have that problem.

Are you washing them in hot water with detergent and bleach?  I would think that would take care of most anything that would be on the cloth.  Also make sure they get really dry before putting them away; since they're so absorbant, you'll need a longer dry cycle than with regular clothes.

  • We use Purex Free and Clear because it is safe for the cloth diapers. No scent to mask the smell of the burp cloths.

I won't even wash DS clothing and sheets with the cloths because of the smell. It is not bad or gross it is just a smell. DS is a messy eater and by the time he is done with a bottle the cloth is wet and sticky from the formula running out of his mouth.

  • Thanks ladies. I will try vinegar. I bought a new stash yesterday at Walmart but try to keep some not so stained ones for when we are in public. I would love to not throw the old ones away and use them at home. Also I have some that are embroidered with his initials, etc.

    LOL.

Agreed with others on the vinegar.  I use All Free & Clear and haven't had smell issues but every baby is different!  Also, you are probably doing this but do you try to wash them right away once soiled? Maybe throw the recently soiled ones in a bucket with water/vinegar until you get a load to wash to start working on the scent right away.

  • I had the best results with hot wash, Dreft, bleach & Baby OxyClean.  Try pretreating them with the Dreft or Baby OxyClean sprays before washing too.  GL!
