Baby Names

Cole as a nn for Nicholas?

I saw a post here a while ago about this. Does anyone remember the consensus?

DH suggested it last night and I thought it was a bit random. But is Cole actually a nn for Nicholas? I see it is on the babynames website, but I wanted to get your opinions too!

TIA!

Re: Cole as a nn for Nicholas?

  • I think Nick is the more common nickname (and I like it better), but I do think Cole is a valid nn option as well. I've never personally met a Nicholas that went by Cole though.

I know a Kenneth who goes by Cole. Is that not random?

  • I think Cole CAN be used as a nn for Nicholas, but it can also be a stand-alone name.

I agree. I think I prefer it as a stand alone name.

  • I think you could definitely pull it off, but unless he is known mostly by Cole, people will tend to go for Nick instead.  It's like the rare Christopher that goes by Topher instead of Chris.

Cole is a name in itself if that's what your going for.

  • I posted on the same topic.   Here's a link (it if works) https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/41019240/ShowThread.aspx#41019240

I do prefer Cole but as others have pointed out it will be a challenge as most people will want to call him Nick.

  • I guess it could it be a nn for Nicholas. However, I think if I heard someone call a child Cole I would just assume it was his full name. I would never guess that it would be a nn for Nicholas.
  • I agree with PP.  I personally have never heard it, but I get it, so why not? If you like it go for it.

  • I voted "Yes", but I would've voted "Other" if it were an option.

We love the name Cole, and tossed around the idea of naming DS Nicholas, nn Cole. Ultimately, we decided that we loved just "Cole" by itself, and were just "eh" about Nicholas.

I think its one of those names that can be used as it's own name, as well as being a nn for something else (like Jack or Drew).

  • I'm a Nichol and my dad has always called me Cole since I was a kid. And my godson was named Cole after me....so yes I think Cole is a good nickname for Nicholas!
  • Most people in that post, if I remember correctly, said that they didn't think Cole was a nn for Nicholas. I disagree; the sound is there, and three of the four letters are there.

  • You can NN your child whatever you want.  To me, it's a bit of a stretch though.

If you like the name Cole, why not call him Cole?

  • It's a bit random, but I think it can work. Just don't delude yourself into thinking that you can avoid Nick altogether--that's not going to happen.

I think we both actually prefer Nick, DH just knows Cole was also on my list and was trying to come up with a suggestion to kill 2 birds with one stone Big Smile

  • I love this idea! My husband's name is Nicholas (but does go by Nick) but if we have another son I will def bring this idea up to him! It's a great way to honor the name Nicholas but have a interesting nickname.

  • I've known two Nicholases that go by Cole.  One is about 12, and the other is 7.
