Nope, not moving out of the country or going back to school...Something even bigger...I am thinking of giving up diet soda. ![]()
Anyone who knows me well knows I'm an addict (I'll be the first to admit it). But given that I've been having a really hard time with losing my baby weight (studies show that diet soda can be a weight loss hindrance, not help), and the fact that I have pretty constant headaches, body aches, anxiety (all linked to aspartame), and other random symptoms these days, I'm thinking I need to quit dumping these chemicals into my body.
I LOVE diet soda... Like insanely love it. Happiness, to me, is a large fountain Diet Dr Pepper from CFA. LOL. I've had 2 diet sodas already today (well, I'm working on my second). I spend too much money on it--trips to the vending machine at work add up, so does keeping it at home all time. I don't do the fancy coffee drinks, but it's for sure my "latte factor."
I do drink water (at least 1 32 oz bottle per day, usually more), so I won't be starting from scratch on that. But I want to get to the point where I drink almost entirely just water. I think for the time being I'm going to substitute herbal iced tea, (caffeinated at first, then eventually moving to decaf--one vice at a time, people!) I'm even considering getting a Keurig, since there's such a fun variety of tea k-cups (I'm not a big coffee drinker, though I'd use it occasionally for that). I figure even with caffeine, at least tea is natural, and has antioxidants, etc.
DH, who's equally addicted, is on board. He gets free sodas at work, and admits he probably won't give them up there, but is fine with not having them at home. I don't want Holly growing up thinking drinking soda all day is normal (like I did...and see where that got me?)
I'm not sure if I want to give it up for good, or just reserve it for very rare treats or occasions. I figure I'd make that decision later.
So.. wish me luck, ladies. This probably sounds ridiculous to most, but it's going to be a huge challenge for me.

Re: NBR: I'm considering a major life decision.
bless your heart!!!!
I am also addicted to diet coke. Ugh, I gave it up when I was pregnant, and it was the first thing I asked for after Lillian was out of me.
I try to only drink one a day, but it usually turns into two. I also drink about 48 oz of water a day.
Let me know how it goes, maybe when I get pregnant with baby #2 I won't start back in with it.
You can do it!!! I had a hard core Mello Yellow habit my freshman year of college and I swear that is why I gained almost 30lbs my first year. Sophmore year I decided to just do water with an occasional soda and virtually no exercise (I've never been a fan of exercise!). Sure enough, the lbs dropped and I haven't looked back since. I still drink my one cup of coffee each morning then nothing but water for the rest of the day. It's weird, but the only time I really have a soda is if we eat mexican - my confession, I can't bring myself to drink water from a mexican restaurant. Yes, I know they do not import the water from mexico and it is the same that would come out of my tap at home, but I just can't do it! Now that I have been on my "water diet" for almost 10 years it's no biggie at all. Sodas actually taste different to me now - very heavy and bloated.
Go for it!
Good luck! I've been debating doing the same thing, but just don't know if I have the willpower. My "coffee" is a diet coke in the morning (i'm drinking it right now!). I usually try to limit myself to just one a day during the work week, but usually have more than that on the weekends. Getting it out of the house is probably a good idea for me, too. Sweet tea is the other thing I really need to give up.
My DH was a regular Coke addict and decided that his New Years resolution two years ago was to give it up. He stopped cold turkey and hasn't had coke, sweet tea, etc. since. I'm still not sure how he is able to resist, but he says he feels so much better since he doesn't drink caffeine/sugar loaded drinks anymore - not to mention the weight he lost right away.
Getting it out of the house is probably the best way to start so you're not tempted. Sounds like you've got a good plan in place and with your DH on board that should help!
Go for it! Then do something fun with the money you're saving!
