travel advice needed

My LO does not like to be in a car seat. She gets reallly fussy. My H wants us to go on a 5 hours trip to go see his college friends. I just don't know what to do. I don't think she will like the ride and on top of that I just don't think I'm going to be comfortable in someone else's house.

What would you do? I really want to make H happy and he really wants us to go, but I want to do what is best for LO. TIA

Re: travel advice needed

  • We're in the same boat- DD has a new found hatred for the car. And we have a trip to NH scheduled for next month. (7.5 hour drive)

At this point we're going to attempt it. We're going to leave first thing in the morning, right when she usually goes down for her first nap and if we have to stop we'll stop and wander around until she's calm enough to continue the trip. If she's hysterical and we're less than halfway there we'll turn around.

We've done road trips in the past and she was great. We took turns sitting in the back to keep her entertained and brought what we needed in order to feel comfortable in someone else's house.

  • Drive overnight, our LO is ambivalent towards the car.  She is only happy if someone sits and entertains her, or she's asleep.  I strongly recommend leaving at her bedtime so you can do the driving while she is sleeping.  We did 2 12 hr car trips this summer.  We drove during the day, unfortunantly so we stopped every 2-3 hours to feed her, and let her roll all over a picnic table.  It worked out, but it was certainly more difficult than traveling during the night would have been.
  • I've found DS tolerates car rides when he's well rested.  If he's tired, he screams.  I suggest leaving right when its nap time, that way LO is asleep for a good chunk, the car ride will probably even prolong her nap (at least it does with my DS) and then when she wakes up, she should be pretty content since she's well rested.  You or DH can sit back there with her and read/play/sing, etc.  That system worked well for us on our long car trip.
