Natural Birth

If you had to be induced...what steps?

If you had to be induced with a ripe cervix, then what would you choose to do?

For DD1, I was at 3cm, 90% effaced.  They did Cytotec, broke my water.

I know Cytotec is so controversial and I was really surprised that my MW said she fears pit more than Cytotec.  It was contrary to everything I had read, but at the time I was so flustered I didn't ask her why.  (I will be having that conversation early this time).

I've read about starting pit at the bare minimum just to get the contrax going and then turning it off and letting the body continue naturally.  That sounds a bit more appealing than insert/dissolve a pill.

It seems to me that Cervadil would not work if you are already "ripe" - am I wrong on this? Would it start contraxs?

  • Cervadil did nothing for me, so if you are already 3 cm I would start with Pit and have them stop if when contractions got regular. That never happened for me so I was on PIT till I delivered.

  • I have heard some horror stories about Cytotec and would never recommend it to anyone.  It baffles me that a midwife would think it is better than pitocin.  At the very least pit is a synthetic version of a naturally occuring hormone.  I would recommend the lowest dose of pit & turn it off.  If your body is ready, then you only need a whiff of it to get your body started & also avoid fetal distress.  Try to avoid an IV which will dilute the naturally occuring hormones and slow labor down.  Just drink 8 oz of water per hour to keep hydrated.

Cervadil only got me to 2 cm?the pit got me the rest of the way with DS. They turned it off after DS came though so that my uterus would contract down some.
  • I think they started me with Cytotec, then breast pump, then Cervadil and then finally pitocin (this was over the course of three nights).  They did the pit at a very low dose and kept on increasing it until they considered me maxed out.  It just caused uterine irritability and after three nights I was only up to a 2ish and got to go home (my bp went stabilized and proteins went down).

  • I had Cervidil overnight and went from "a 2 or a 3" to a 4 by morning. Didn't start contractions regularly until they started the Pit though later that morning. I tolerated the Pitocin contractions no problem; it wasn't till the amniotomy that things really got intense for me.

  • Did your midwife tell you why she didn't like pitocin? My MW used pitocin for my induction, and I was on it the entire time. I had a GREAT experience with it. I was hooked up to the IV at 11:30am, and my DD was born at 8:20pm. I was able to do it pain-med free like I wanted as well. It wasn't my ideal labor, being hooked up to an IV the entire time (which was a huge pain dragging that thing with me to the bathroom!) but I had a really good experience, despite hearing a lot of negative things about pitocin.
