BF and pump and dump q

I have been taking some pain killers with this horrible mastitis I have and  headaches.  I have been pumping and dumping pretty much everything:( I have only 4 frozen bags left which makes it very stressful.  If I take a pain killer that should only be in my system for 6 hours and I pump 7 hours after I take it should I dump or keep?   I think I am confused because you don't have to dump the morning after drinking alcohol.  It does not stay in the breast milk.  Do pain killers stay in the breast milk?  I was under the impression it did not but my family Dr said something on Monday that makes me think the other.   Thanks!

  • What kind of painkillers are you taking?

I know when I had my c-section, I was taking both ibuprofen (OTC) and vicodin.  Vicodin is safe to take when BFing.  I'm not sure if all narcotics are, but I know that one is safe for a couple of days.

  • Going along with what Katie said, I was given Percoset for pain after delivery, and it's safe to take while BFing.

But I don't know about other drugs or how long they stay in your system.

  • I took percocet for my c-section and was nursing the whole time.  I wonder why your doctor made you think differently!  I would hate to get down to only 4 bags of frozen supply!

  • I took Percocet after O and was able to BF normally.
  • After all 3 of my c-sections I took pain meds (Vicodin, Percoset and Tylenol 3/codeine... not all at the same time, LOL) but breastfed normally.

I'm not sure what meds you are taking but there's a decent chance you don't need to dump at all.

  • I have been taking percocet for migraines since delivery which was given by my OB. I avoid them at all cost by when it comes down to me not being able to take care of DD, I end up taking the pill.  My family Dr on Monday told me that it will cause constipation and drowsiness in DD.  He also told me that I have to pump and dump that it will stay in my milk??  DD has been having some problems with constipation this last month so I do not want to add any more causes to it.

  • Hopefully one of our pharmacists will see this. Maybe call your pharmacist, pedi or a lactation consultant?

I did find this on Kellymom.

I agree with ppl... I'm another one who took Percocet for 10 days after delivery, which was obviously prescribed by my OB and completely safe for nursing. Percocet and advil (among many others) are widely given and are safe for nursing mothers.

I'm surprised and sad for all the wasted milk! I cant believe your Dr is giving you wrong information... https://www.kellymom.com/health/meds/pain-meds.html

  • I will chime in with the PPs here. I was on Vicodin with absolutely no adverse effect on BFing or LO's bowel movements at all. I seriously recommend getting a second opinion with a Pedi or LC.
