Natural Birth

Example Birth Plans?

I'm in the process of putting together our birth plan for the hospital, and would love to see any examples of your completed birth plans.

We'll be using the Bradley Method during labor, so birth plans along those lines would be especially appreciated.  :)

I'm having a hard time keeping things simple enough, while still getting all the pertinent information in there...

Here is ours. Our Bradley instructor reviewed it. I have to see if I can trim out one or two things to get it all on one page, but it is pretty close.  This is in case of a hospital transfer since we plan to deliver in a birth center.

We understand that certain emergency or other medical circumstances may not allow for the accommodation of the goals listed below.

    Hospital Labor Goals

    • We plan to have present at the labor and birth: Midwife, husband and doula
    • Except in the case of an emergency, we ask that we be given the opportunity to accept or refuse any procedure or medication.
    • We ask that non-chemical induction methods be tried first: walking, breast stimulation, position changes, etc.  If chemical induction is needed we would prefer to start at the lowest dose possible.
    • Please do not offer pain medication.  The mother will ask for it if needed.
    • The mother would like the opportunity to be up out of bed as much as possible during labor, depending on her needs.
    • The mother prefers not to have an IV unless medically necessary.
    • The mother prefers not to have a catheter unless medically necessary.
    • The mother prefers to use intermittent fetal monitoring according to ACOG guidelines.
    • The mother would prefer to have minimal vaginal exams.
    • The mother would like to eat and drink at her discretion.
    • The birth environment is important to us. We ask that lights be kept dim, noise be kept to a minimum, and the door be kept closed for privacy.

    Delivery Goals

    • The mother would like to push at her own pace and wait for the urge to push even if fully dilated.
    • The mother prefers not to have an episiotomy unless determined to be medically necessary. She would first like to try perineal massage, support and warm compresses.
    • We would like to have the baby placed on the mother's chest with skin-to-skin contact immediately after the birth and for the first 1 to 2 hours following the birth.
    • We would like to try to have the baby breastfeed as soon as possible.

    Umbilical Cord

    • We would like the umbilical cord to stop pulsing before being cut.
    • Please offer the father the opportunity to cut the cord if he so desires at the time.

    Newborn Care Goals

    • Please delay the eye medication and vitamin K shot until we have spent some time with the baby.
    • All necessary newborn procedures should be done either while the baby is on the mother?s chest or on the bed.

    Breastfeeding Goals

    • We would like to establish breastfeeding. Please do not offer any bottles to the baby without parents' notification of a medical need.
    • We would like to meet with a lactation consultant before leaving the hospital to have techniques checked.

    Photography

    • We would like the father and the doula to be allowed to take photos of parts of the labor and birth.

    Footprints

    • We would like to have a set of footprints stamped into our scrapbook when footprints are done.

    Cesarean Section (if necessary)

    • The mother would like to be conscious and have one arm free.
    • The mother would like the father and the doula present.
    • We would prefer that our baby breastfeed as soon as possible afterward in the recovery room.
    • We prefer the baby and father remain in the recovery room with the mother.
    • If the baby must go to the nursery, we would like the father to accompany her.
    • The mother would like the incision closed with double layer suturing because in the future she would like to attempt a VBAC.

Here's a copy of mine - it all fits onto one page:

We are looking forward to the upcoming birth of our baby and to sharing the experience with you.  We have created the following birth plan to help you understand our preferences.  We hope to experience birth with little or no intervention.  We fully understand that in certain circumstances these guidelines may not be followed, but it is our hope that you will assist us in making this the experience we've hoped for.  If you have any questions or suggestions, please let us know and thank you for being a part of this special day for us.

    Labor:

-MTAngel plans to use Bradley natural childbirth method so we ask that references to pain be avoided

-Please do not offer analgesics or anesthesia, we will request them if we want them.

    - MTAngel would like as few vaginal exams as possible and as few interruptions as possible.

-MTAngel would like fetal monitoring to be intermittent and external.

-MTAngel would like to be allowed food and drink as long as her Dr deems safe.

-MTAngel would like to avoid labor augmentation. If augmentation is required she would first like to attempt natural methods such as nipple stimulation. Artificial rupturing of membranes and pitocin should only be considered as a last resort.

    Birth:

    - MTAngel would like to  use whatever position feels most comfortable during delivery.

    -  MTAngel does not want an episiotomy and would prefer to tear naturally. She would appreciate perineal massage and compresses to aid in stretching.

    -  MTAngel would like to avoid the use of vacuum or forceps during delivery.

Following the Birth and For Baby:

-MTAngel would like to have immediate skin to skin contact and would like to try breast feeding as soon as possible following delivery

-Please delay clamping/cutting the baby's umbilical cord until it has stopped pulsing

-MTAngel would like to deliver the placenta naturally, please do not administer pitocin unless necessary

-Please delay all non-critical procedures until after we have bonded with our baby.

-MTAngel plans to breast feed only.  Please do not give pacifiers or formula without permission.

    Cesarean Section:

-In the event that a c-section is necessary, MTAngel would like her husband to be present at all times and to follow the rest of our wishes for the postpartum period as closely as possible.

  • I'm planning a VBAC, so it's required for me to have continuous monitoring and a saline lock at my hospital...the rest of it is pretty basic. If there's time, we'll call ahead about the tub, telemetry unit (there's only one!) and the squat bar, besides having it on my birth plan. We're also really paranoid about the pediatric dept, as DS had a suspected infection (that was never proven), and we were bullied into some really aggressive treatment for him, so we're being extra cautious...

    Birth Plan requests:

? I would like to use the telemetry unit for continuous monitoring, have access to a tub and have the squat bar available for pushing

? Please do not offer me pain medications or epidural. I will ask for them if I feel the need

? Heplock only, no IV unless medically neccesary

? No vaginal checks unless I request them

? Please turn down the sound on the monitor to not hear the baby?s heartbeat

? I am planning on doing mother-directed/undirected pushing. I will ask for help or coaching if I feel the need

    ? Delayed cord clamping

    After baby is born:

    ?Skin-to-skin contact immediately

? No procedures done unless my husband or I have given explicit permission

? The baby is to stay with me or my husband at all times

? If there is a need for medical attention, we would prefer to deal with attending physicians - no residents/students, please

? Please do not give the baby sugar water, formula or pacifiers without our permission

    ? No Hepatitis B shot

    ? No antibiotic eye drops

? We will not be circumcising if we have a boy

? DH is allergic to codeine

? I am allergic to sulfa drugs

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • This was the plan that we created.  It is very simple and covered all that was important to me.  Happy Birthing!

    Birth Plan

Our goal is to have a natural unmediated birth and we respectfully request the following of the medical staff during labor.

?        Please offer encouragement rather than medication

?        Freedom of movement during labor

?        Hep lock/saline well rather than IV unless medically necessary

?        Minimal cervics checks, only when requested

    ?        Intermittent fetal monitoring 10-15 min/hour

?        Please wait to cut umbilical cord until pulsating stops

?        Baby to chest with skin to skin contact immediately

?        Immediate Breast feeding and a full hour of family bonding with routine procedures delayed or done while holding baby

?        Please do not remove vernix

?        Rooming in for baby, and no supplemental formula or pacifiers

?        No Pitocin for delivery of placenta unless medically necessary

We understand that if any complications arise, mother and baby?s safety are the first priority and will be flexible in our plan. If a problem does occur, please inform us so we can discuss our options with you and decide the best course of action.

    Thank you!
