Tell Me About Your Induction Experience...

please! I'm beginning to feel a little anxious.  Thanks!

Re: Tell Me About Your Induction Experience...

  • When are you getting induced?

I was induced 3 days past my due date.  I was dilated for weeks so was 5cm dilated when I went in to get induced (was not in labor).  It was a good experience for me.  The only problem I had was DS wouldn't drop, so after I was 10cm, I "labored down" for 2 hours to see if he'd drop, which he did.  I then pushed for an hour and 20 minutes before we realized he wouldn't be coming out without help.  With the help of the vacuum and one set of pushes, he came out far enough for me to get him out the rest of the way myself.  Those issues were because he was big.  I will probably get induced with this baby as well around 39 weeks if this baby looks to be as big as Dylan was.

  • I went in around 7:30 am and by 9 I was hooked up to pitocin.  About every 10-15mins the nurse would come in and increase my dose to a max of 20, which is what the majority of all OBs go to.  I was contracting every 2 mins and it was not painful.  Just a lot of stomach tightness.  My OB came and checked me every 3-4 hours.  I never got the cervidil to rippen my cervix.  It was after they broke my water when I started feeling pain.

     Good Luck!

  • I checked in at 6:30.  They started pitocin between 7 and 7:30 and then broke my water by 8:30.

DS #1 was born at 11:11 that morning.

Same routine with DS#2, but he was born at 10:36.

They were both very pleasant experiences.  No complaints here.

I may be induced next Wednesday.  I'll be at 36 weeks and 3 days.  I have an appointment at the hospital Tuesday night for Cervidil and the Pitocin would start Wednesday morning.  I'd be induced because the baby is small (below 10%) and my uterus is considered a "hostile environment" for growth (!).

  • I was induced at 41 weeks. I went in Sunday night for Cervadil. The next morning I was given Pitocin around 7:00am. I didn't feel any contractions, though they said I was having them when I went in Sunday night. My water was broken around 8:30 or 9 and Evan was born at 2:35.

The only complication I had is that his heartbeat dropped when I was pushing, so I had to wait for about an hour to push even though he had crowned. Oh, and my epidural didn't completely work, but it wasn't too bad.

All-in-all it was a good experience and nowhere near what I thought it would be like. It was very surreal.

  • i was already at least 4cm from my ob appt the week prior when i went in for my induction so i didn't have to go in for the cervadil.

i went in at 5am to check in.  got my pitocin around 630am.  did not progress much until the dr broke my water aroun 930/10am then i went to 7cm.  stalled at 8cm for about 2/2.5 hours.  pushed for 8 mins, and she was born at 143pm.

my dr really expected her to come about 2 hours earlier, bc my first had been a pretty fast labor.

i had an epi, but could feel the contractions slightly, but nothing painful, just tightening of my stomach.  that was weird to me bc i also had an epi with maddy and didn't feel a thing/

everything went very smoothly for me.... good luck to you!!

  • while i was already having contractions when i was induced, they were irregular and not that strong. the pitocin made them very intense very quickly.

they began the drip at about 6:30am and then they turned off the pitocin after 12 hours, but made me wait a couple of hours before i could eat or get up. they turned it back on at 3am.

i got my epidural about 6:45am the next morning. that sped up my dilation and i went from 2 to 5cm almost immediately. broke my water at 9am, began pushing at 1:35pm and dd was born at 3pm.

  • I had an induction with two of my babies. Both were fine - I just stayed up and active, walking, standing, dancing, bouncing on the birth ball - LOTS of trips to the bathroom (then detours around the room). :)

I also made sure that my Bishop's Score made me a good candidate. :)

  • With #1, no dilation or effacement

    Night before - Cervadil

    Morning around 7am - pitocin

    Epidural around noon

Dr broke water at 1cm dilated around 2pm

7pm, fully dilated and had Emmy had 7:20pm

With #2, finger tip dilation and 0% efface

    night before - cervadil

morning after around 6am - pitocin (the Dr actually wanted to do another night of cervadil but I wanted to get things started)

Epidural at 10am (learned the first time that there was no point waiting!)

Dr broke water around 1pm (2 cm dilated)

Fully dilated by 4:30pm, baby was out by 4:50pm.

  • Monday - No progress, got prepadil out patient (no effect)

Wednesday evening - checked in, cervadil (no effect)

Thursday - misoprostol, had contractions but no progress

Friday - pitocin, more contractions and still no progress

Saturday - more pitocin, failed (due to no progress) Foley bulb attempt... still no progress

Sunday - c/s after L started having decels. Umbilical cord was less than 5 inches long - induction or not, I would have ended up with a c/s.

  • I had to be induced at 34w4d because of stupid preeclampsia. They wheeled me to the hospital from my OB appt for more testing, then decided later that night that we needed to go ahead and induce. I had been on bedrest for a week or so, so it wasn't a huge shock but it was scary. At least I didn't have time to sit around and worry about it. I feel for you!

I had a good experience with induction. Sometime that night they started Cervadil, no problems there. Around 6 am or so the Pitocin started. I felt nothing for a while, then just mild crampy contractions. My doc came in a few hours later (10am maybe?) and I was only dilated 2cm. She broke my water, then the contractions started getting serious. Got the epi around 11:30. Relaxed for a while, then started feeling pressure. I thought something was wrong with the foley catheter but turns out I was fully dilated and ready to go. I pushed through 3 contractions and DD was born at 1:27.

    Good luck next week!

  • Mine could not have gone more smoothly.  Induced at 39 weeks, I was 3cm, 80%, I had been in early labor all weekend, so I was so.done.

Went in at 6am, IV, pitocin, doc came and broke my water (I had meconium), got epi, pushed DS out in 40 min.  Was in laboe for a total 8.5 hours.  It was awesome.

  • Elective induction 3 days before due date (which was a blessing considering I was diagnosed w/pre-eclampsia upon arrival).  Checked in at 8PM and cervadil started.  Pitocin started at 6AM following morning. Had my water broken at around 10:30 AM.  Stayed at 2-3 cm dilated until around 2PM when suddenly I was at 8. Started pushing at 3PM and DD was born at 4:01PM.

Aside from some minor issues w/my epidural (NOT induction related), I had a fantastic experience.

  • I've had two...ok, 1.5 inductions.  Amelia was induced and I was in labor with Juliet, but still needed pitocin.  Pitocin makes contractions SO.MUCH.HARDER for me.  I dilated with A to 10 without pain meds (ouch) and then they gave me the epi to keep me from pushing/control my pain.

With J I asked for the epi at 3-4, they tried, it never worked.  They finally gave me another epi at 7 and when I laid back down I got that all telling feeling of needing to push...yep i was complete and it hadn't started working.

I REALLY wish I knew the joy of laboring pain free, but at least I know that I can do it without it.  If we have a third I will likely go pain med free (because it's not worth trying to do for me) and if at all possible I'll skip pitocin.  We'll see!

If you want to read each of my birth stories I'll happily share them, just shoot me an email.

  • I was induced with both girls and had great experiences both times.

Reagan - induced 3 days before due date. They thought she was going to be big.  Started pitocin at 6am, they broker my water at 12pm, at 7pm they threatened a c-section because she wouldn't move down, she moved down and was born at 9pm.

Abby - induced 1 week before due date. She was full term and Dr was fine with it. Pitocin started at 7am, broke my water at 11am, she was born at 2pm.
