High-Risk Pregnancy

GD moms- Glyburide?

Did/do any of you take Glyburide for your fasting numbers being too high?  I went today to go over my numbers for the week (this was my first week testing) and I didn't have one fasting number under 90 like they wanted- so they put me on Glyburide.  Do any of you take it?  Is it better/ worse than insulin?

I'm just wondering if it has any more risks than if I were just taking insulin instead?

Re: GD moms- Glyburide?

  • I don't take Glyburide but I do take another form of it (I'm allergic to the sulfa in the Glyburide). Basically the dr told me that he wants me on the medication for about a week to see how my body reacts to it, its going to help my body break down the carbs so that the baby isn't producing as much insulin. If he doesn't like my numbers, then we'll turn to the insulin.

     EDIT:

I realized I didn't even answer your questions lol..I'm sorry, it's late and I've kinda been in panic mode about all of this. I don't think there is any more/less risks being on either or else the dr's wouldn't allow it.

  • My endocrinologist doesn't prescribe Glyburide to pregnant women since it's considered Cat. C in pregnancy, whereas insulin is not.

Sorry, don't have any further details than that.

Good luck!   Hope it works well for you!  :)

  • I take 5mg at night. I can't say if its better/worse than insulin as I've never taken insulin before.

It was controversial for awhile because it hadn't been tested on pregnant women before. However, new studies came out last year saying it was safe. (I did my research before taking it).

  • My doc put me on Glyburide after I failed my 3 hour test. My fasting numbers were ok (77), but the next 2 numbers were outrageous (213 and 237). I started taking it last week (5mg) and lasted about 3 days on it. It made my blood sugar drop like crazy (down to 50), so I quit taking it. Had a follow up with OB yesterday and he wanted me to try 1/2 a pill, cause some of my numbers were still higher than what he would like, so I am going to try that. He has not said anything to me about insulin yet.
  • I started it last night and my fasting number was already better this morning. I took it with DS and he and I were both fine.

  • I'm on insulin, but from what I understand Glyburide is considered Category C.  As with many medications during pregnancy, they don't quite know what it does when it crosses the placenta since they can't do studies on pregnant women per say.  Also, insulin is easier to adjust if needed.  I would say if your OB is ok with the Glyburide then don't let it bother you.  You should always go by what your OB thinks (because they can take in all your other patient information when making a choice) rather than what others say, unless it's just stupid like "you can drink a six pack" or something.

  • I took Glyburide with my ds, I had no problem with my numbers after meals, but my fasting number were always in the 110-130 range, it controlled my fasting numbers well, I never did insulin, so I can't give you a comparison.

I'm about to get put on Glyburide again with this pregnancy because my fasting number have been in the 110-130 range again.  I would rather take the gly. pill than insulin shots.

  • I have been taking it for a month now, for the same reason you are being prescribed. I take it with Breakfast and with dinner. I have had no problems. They did want to double it at one point in the morning and I felt my sugar going to low in the afternoon so I went back to my normal dose. I have not heard of any problems or concerns on the safety of Glyburide. It took a day or 2 but it did help my numbers somewhat.  Hope I helped some. Your 1st few days just make sure you test EXACTLY when you are supposed to and have a snack handy. If you wait 2 and 1/2 hours vs. 2 hours, your sugar may drop too low.
