almost 2...still not putting himself to sleep, help!

My son will put himself to sleep at night for both my husband and I but during the day for his nap I have made the mistake of still holding him before his naps.  My husband can just put him down and he will go right to sleep without a peep...same thing with my mother in law and grandma.  For me though, he just won't do it.  I've tried numerous times...again today.  I put him down just like I do for bedtime and he just kep talking and laughing for an hour until I finally gave in, picked him up and he was out in 2 minutes.

We have another baby coming..very soon and I really wanted him to put himself down for naps to make it a little easier for me...any suggestions?  Do I just keep him in the bed even if he's playing until three hours is up (I doubt he would last that long without screaming) and we don't do cio.  Do I let him skip his naps...which I don't think is good either.  Just really would like this to happen soon.  Any advice is appreciated.

Re: almost 2...still not putting himself to sleep, help!

  • When we moved DD from PNP (she's always hated her crib) because she climbed out to her bed, we had this problem.  At bedtime she went right to sleep, but not at naptime.  I just let her play.  She would alternate between playing, reading and occasionally coming to the gate and whining.   The first day it took over an hour for her to fall asleep, same the second day.  Third was about 30 min.  By day number 4, she was falling asleep normally.  I would just let him play till he realized it was nap time.  He'll fall asleep eventually.  If not, no nap and hopefully he'll learn.

  • Can you try transitioning from holding him to just patting him in his crib and then eventually not being in there at all?
