Is it too late to change our vacc schedule?

After talking to our pedi while pregnant, we chose to go with the AAP schedule.  It seemed to be fine for DS.  I don't know if this is some crazy instinct or what but when we went for DS' 18 month appointment, DH and I read the shot info, as we always do, and both left we shouldn't do all of the shots.  Although DS has never had a reaction, DH and I both felt really weird and declined 2 shots.  Lo and behold, DS had an extremely strong reaction to Dtap.  Bad enough that we took him back to the doc two days later just to have him checked.  Serious crazy parent instinct or something.

I haven't really looked at any of the delayed schedules.  Are we past that point now or is it still worth researching?

  • We got all vacc's per AAP guidelines until 12 months and the I changed.  IMO its only too late after he's gotten the shots, before that you can change.

  • Definitely not too late. And by the time they are 18 months if they are following the AAP schedule, he's probably had most of them anyways. Do you know which ones he has left?

This is what I was figuring, by now he might be past the point of delaying anything since he has had most.  Ds is getting the flu shot next week so I will have DH pick up a copy of what he has had and what is left and then research the remaining stuff.  Thanks!

I'm sorry your son had a bad reaction to the Dtap but a 9th baby just died in CA of Pertussis.

And this is why we are choosing to vaccinate in general.   I can't imagine what those poor parents are going through.

  • I just read the Dr Sears Vaccine Book because I was on the fence about a lot of vaccines.  I liked that the book is very neutral and just explains the facts, but after reading it, I knew that I would do all vaccinations on schedule.  Yes it can be scary to vaccinate, but the diseases/illnesses are even scarier.  The only one I don't think I want to get is the chicken pox vaccine.  But if you are questioning any vaccine, I recommend checking that book out.  It tells what's in it, what the illnesses are, how common they are, possible side effects, etc.  It clears up a lot of common misconceptions.
