Moms of 2 - L&D?

So, it's pretty likely that we will have a baby next week...pending Tuesday's growth ultrasound.  I am already scheduled to go to the hospital Tuesday night for Cervadil and will start the induction Wednesday morning.

Naturally, I immediately began to worry about what to do with our daughter while I'm in the hospital (and how sad I'm going to be to spend that time away from her).  I think we have a preliminary plan, but what did you do with #1 during that time? Any tips and/or advice?

Re: Moms of 2 - L&D?

  • I checked into the hospital at 6:30 in the morning for my induction with #2.  My mom came over early that morning to be with Alex when he woke up.  She stayed with him all day until Dh came back home.  He stayed at home that night and they both picked me up from the hospital the next day with #2.

  • I went into labor spontaneously on a Saturday morning.  Because it was my second labor, it took less than no time for me to be virtually incapacitated by the contractions.  I literally had no warning that I was going to have a baby, and super quickly.

All of our neighbors had offered us their childcare services in the event of this kind of emergency.  But b/c it was Saturday morning, everyone was at the soccer fields or the grocery store or something.  DH had a terrible time finding someone to take care of Sarah.  He finally found someone to take her and he rushed me to the hospital.  I delivered less than two hours later. By that time DH's parents had finally gotten to our neighborhood to help with Sarah.

In hindsight we probably should have just driven her to the hospital with us, but I really needed DH's undivided attention and I did NOT want to deal with my 21-month-old while I was in all kinds of pain.

I think the only reason it happened this way was because we really weren't expecting her to come 'til the following weekend.  Best laid plans!

  • My mom came to be here for the birth of #2.  She watched him the night we went in for our induction.  The next moring I had a sitter come to the house so she could be there for the birth.  Lila was born and she went home to watch Luca a second night.  The next day she brought Luca up to the hospital and we all went home together.
  • We dropped #1 off with my parents on the way to the doctor.  He spent the day with them.  The next day DH took him to the IL's to come pick me up.

  • i had an induction as well and my parents came to get my dd the night before my induction.  it was really nice to have one night with my dh, went out to dinner and it was very sweet.  my parents brought dd up to the hospital on delivery day to meet new baby.  parents kept dd at their house while dh and i were in hospital for two nights and then brought her to our house when we came home.  thankfully, my parents spent a 2 weeks with us and helped so much with dd.  gave her loads of attention and helped keep her on her normal schedule (mdo, meals, etc.).

    good luck and congrats!

  • My water broke in the middle of the night during the weekend.  We called my best friend, who came and spent the rest of the night at our house with DS1 sleeping there.  She stayed with him part of the day, and then another friend came over later.  DH went and brought DS1 up to the hospital to meet DS2, and then they went home for the night.  DS1 spent part of the next morning up at the hospital with us, and then my dad took him home for awhile.  The morning we brought DS2 home, DH dropped DS1 at a friend's house, and she took him and her daughter to MDO.
  • I went in to labor at 3 am. We had to wake Tru up and take him to the hospital with us. He was such a little trooper but it still makes me want to cry thinking about him in his pajamas and crocs, half asleep on DH's lap in the delivery room. Around 5 am, we called our p/t nanny and asked if she could watch him until my mom arrived that afternoon, which she did. I mean, it wasn't the worst case sceanrio, but it wasn't the best either. Sometimes it's pretty hard to not have any family close by.

  • I called KelleyA at 2am and she came and stayed with K until after C was born and DH could get back home. Shortly after that his parents arrived and he was able to get back to the hospital.

We had an induction planned for the next week with childcare already arranged but C decided that wouldn't do.

  • i was induced and had to be at the hospital at 5am, so maddy spent the night at my parent's.

after the baby arrived, my parents brought maddy up to the hospital every day for a little bit and then took her home to stay with them every night.  on the day we came home, my parents met us at our house to bring maddy home.

ETA: if i had gone into labor on my own, the plan was for maddy to go to my parents... if it was in the middle of the night, my bff was "on call" to come over to stay with her until the morning, when my mom could get to our house.

  • I have no advice but good luck!
