Baby wearing with an apnea moniter

A friend of mine had a baby a couple weeks ago. He had trouble breathing and got sent home with an apnea monitor. It's basically a band around his chest with a wire running down each side that connects to a machine. She has a moby and a pouch sling, but she's not sure how to use them without the wires getting in the way. Can anyone recommend a carrier for her? They are on a bit of a budget. The baby was born weighing 8lbs 9oz if that makes a difference. TIA

Re: Baby wearing with an apnea moniter

  • Hello!

I first must say I am in no way a babywearing expert!  I do however have a baby on an apnea monitor and I wear him in a moby :)  I always wear him in the tummy to tummy upright hold (i'm sure there is another name for this).  I put the belt on him first and have the wires dangling,  put him in the wrap and make sure the wires are still hanging down between his legs and then hook up the wires to the monitor.  It works wonderfully and I haven't had any problems at all with this technique!  I also have a pouch sling but wasn't able to make it work well!

So are his legs out? Do the wires go out through the top or down by his legs?

  • My guy is 6 months now so his legs are out and the wires go down by his legs...the wires are super long so it works fine.  When he was younger I pulled the fabric over his legs but still had the wires come out from the bottom.  I noticed when I had the wires come out through the top that I had a lot more false alarms and the wires seemed uncomfortable to me.  Hope that helps...I am not sure if that was clear at all :)  I can look for pictures if that would help?  I always have him in some sort of onesie so I secure the leads through the velcro of his diaper and then put the leads through the leg of the onesie...that way they lay flat against his body and don't leave marks.

  • Hug hold is the name of the carry being described.  NB hughold is legs in and the traditional hug hold is legs out.  I think either would work as long as you plug the wires in after placing baby.  And depending on how big the machine is (and if it has to be plugged into the wall) she might be able to put the machine in the cumberbun off to the side.

  • Thanks. I'm familiar with the different carries I was just having trouble imagining how to run the wires out with the newborn hug hold because the legs are in...

  • I carry my DD in a moby with the apnea monitor! I just have the wires coming out of the top and hanging down and i have the monitor on my shoulder (it comes in a bag) and I tuck all the extra wires in that so there arent a ton hanging down....I've posted a pic on here..I will try to find it for you. I had DD out with us and in the moby and this one guy came up to me and asked if that was a heated blanket lol

Lol I did find your post with pictures and emailed her the link, I hope you don't mind. Lol about the heated blanket idea, I bet some moms who live up north would love that!
