3rd Trimester

Should I be concerned?

I'm 34 weeks along with twins and currently have an ultrasound done every 4 weeks and then see my OB every 4 weeks as well.  It ends up over-lapping so that I'm at the doctors office about every 2 weeks.  Well after this past doctors appt I'm getting a little concerned about my OB.  I figured now that I'm farther along my doc would increase my visits and be checking me a little more thoroughly...especially since my last ultrasound at 32 weeks showed my cervix was thinning out, I've started getting cramps and baby A is super low.  Well I saw my OB and he's not going to see me again until after my next ultrasound which is at 36 weeks.  Plus my visit was very short and all he did was come in and ask if I had any questions then scheduled the next appt.  I've been reading about the strep B test which should be done in the next couple weeks and neither him or the nurse said anything about it.  I'm really concerned that my doc isn't paying much attention to my pregnancy or doing the necessary tests.  What do you think?  Should I be concerned and does this seem a little odd to you?  I'm going to call them about the strep B test but also wanted to get your feedback.

Re: Should I be concerned?

  • My last ultrasound was at 30 weeks and my next is the day after tomorrow.  My cervix has shortened some as of my last u/s, but not enough to cause my doc any concern.  My weekly visits will not start until next week (10/01) and we haven't discussed the strep B test yet because there's still a question on whether or not I will be delivering vaginally or by c-section.  As I understand, they don't do the strep B test if you're having a c-section.   Any labor/birth plans will be discuss at the 10/01 appointment, when I'll be 35w5d.

My doc spends about 10 minutes with me per appointment, basically to ask if I have any questions, check fundal height and check the heartbeats.  Starting Friday I'll be having a weekly NST to check on the girls.   I haven't had any tests other than blood tests since my very first appointment back in March when I had a pee test.

If you're concerned, then the best thing to do would be to bring it up with your doc at your next appointment or call the nurses prior to your appointment to let them know you have concerns.

  • Both my twins are in the head down position so I will be trying for a vaginal birth.
  • Some docs dont switch patients over to every two weeks until closer to 36 weeks, and the gbs can be scheduled between weeks 36-38. I wouldnt really worry about it but you are the one who gets to see him, so you have to be comfortable with it. Good luck.

  • My doc does the gbs test at 36 weeks, BUT I'm not having twins so I don't know if they should do yours early or not.

If you are concerned you should call them -- that's what they are there for, to make sure you know what's going on.

  • Well, I just had my 36 week appointment on monday and thats when I have my strep B test...i didn't get any warning so they probably will do it at your next appointment so i wouldn't be concerned. I am surprised that your not have bimonthly visits yet. I've had them since around 30 weeks. at 35 weeks I started by weekly visits. Also here you don't schedual things separate...
  • Have you been seeing a MFM as well as an OB? I am 27 weeks with twins and I have an u/s every 2 weeks to check cervical length, and every 4th week to check their growth.  They told me that starting at 32 weeks, I will have to go twice a week for NST and they will be monitoring their growth rates to make sure they are growing at the same rate. (Up to this point, they have been at exactly the same rate, so they aren't overly concerned at this point). I haven't been scheduled for my strep B test yet, but I would be concerned if it was at 36 weeks, since it's not unusual to have twins arrive between 35 and 37 weeks.
