No blood test, doctor just set up appointment for 8 weeks

Hi,

It is my first pregnancy and I took two pregnancy tests both were positive so I called my doctor today and they just set up an appointment.  From friends and family I have heard that usually they have you come in to confirm you are pregnant with a blood test.  Has anyone else had this?

  • My doctor did not do a blood test but did have me come in and take a urine test to confirm my pregnancy.  Plenty of ladies do not have appointments until 8-10 weeks though. It is completely normal!

PS Looks like we have the same due date Smile

Edit: OH, and you have Owen and Nolan/Nolen on your name list too! Stick out tongue Good choices!

  • No, my OB just set up an appointment for the 8 week mark as well (I'll actually only be 6 weeks at the appointment though b/c they are currently dating from LMP and I am dating from late ovulation.)

  • I'm not seeing an OB until 9-10 weeks... This is pretty standard unless you have fertility issues or problems that arise.
  • I just called to make my first appointment & they didn't even ask my LMP or how far along I was, just made me an appointment for next thursday.  My PCP did a urine test before she referred me though.

  • My doctors office won't see me until I'm 10 weeks.  They said I could come in for a blood test to be sure, but if I had a position HPT, I was pregnant.

  • Nope. Just have appointment at 8 weeks. No need to confirm with blood test, the tests you took were confirmation enough.

Yup. My experience too - both times now. I just called my OB for 1st appt and it is right around 8 weeks. I just told them i was PG, and that was it.

  • totally normal.  I am at a new doctor this time (we moved) and it's the same as the old OB.  I got in at 8 weeks for an u/s. Nothing prior.

  • Most doctors don't do blood tests unless you have suffered previous losses or have gone through infertility treatments.  It's not unusual to have your first appointment at around 10 or 11 weeks.

  • I have Kaiser and they just set up the 8 week appointment. I really wanted to feel reassured with a test from THEM because I'm like that, so I went into their clinic and they were more than happy to test me there. Then I was able to ask a nurse some questions, get more information, etc. I felt more comfortable that they gave me SOME advice -- most of it I knew already but it was reassuring and they didn't charge a copay.
  • my doctor's office does not have you come in from bloodwork.  I've had it done because of issues with my daughter's pregnancy...but they won't routinely get you in until 8 - 10 weeks. I go for my first appt next week...at 9 weeks.
  • The only time my dr confirms with a blood test is if you had a previous m/c or TTTC. Perfectly normal!

I have Kaiser as well and they sent me to the nurse clinic for a urine test, also no co-pay. The test came back negative but since I had gotten 2 digital positives at home they sent me for blood work to figure out what was up. That's the only reason I had blood work done. They also scheduled me for what they assume is an 8 week ultrasound, even though I told them I didn't think I was that far along, they are basing it on LMP but it was my first cycle off BCP and so it was really long and I think I am actually 2 weeks behind what they think.

  • Mine is the same, they just said I could make a 10-week appointment.  They told me I could come in for a blood test to confirm if I wanted to, but it was up to me (I'm going in tomorrow for the test, I figure it would be good to touch base).

I guess if you have no issues and there's no reason to worry, they don't see you as soon.  I was a bit concerned at first because lately it seems like all the pregnant women I know have been seeing their doctors really often.  But it occurred to me that all of them were over 35 and/or had had issues getting pregnant, so their docs probably wanted to monitor them more closely.
