My 10 month old spits her food everywhere when feeding her! Its gotten to the point where we get so frustrated we give up and only give her bottles. Can someone give me advice on how to stop this behavior? Its so frustrating for us.
What is happening that she is spilling the food? What are you feeding her? At 10 months, she should definitely be getting more than just bottles (assuming she is on formula; if she was on breastmilk, then maybe I could see an argument for no solids... maybe.)
Are you giving her jar food, or small bits of 'real' food? (by 10 months, my dd was mostly off jar food)
At that age, Liv was really into trying to feed herself. Often times, I would give her a spoon and a (very small) bowl of applesauce and let her go to town while I shoveled the jar food in her mouth. Otherwise, if her meal was 'real' food, I would put it all over her tray (no plates) and let her go to town, while I would sneak food into her mouth.
If you give us an example, I am sure we will have some suggestions
(but honestly, messy meal-time is just kind of the name of the game at this point)
ETA: ack! The first time I read spits as spills, hence my answer above.
Do you let her feed herself? Or is she spitting jar food that you are spooning in her mouth?
She is spitting the gerber foods in the jars. I know she is hungry but spits it. I wonder if she would be ready for the gerber meals they have. She might just be bored with the baby foods.
Try giving her small pieces of finger foods on her tray while you feed her the baby food. It might distract her enough to keep the food in her mouth. You can also try and change the texture of her baby food (adding rice/whole wheat cereal) or mixing them together (a jar of pears and a jar of sweet potato).
If she's doing it because she thinks it's funny, stop reacting to her in any way (positive or negative). After she spits the food, turn your head away for a few seconds, then turn back and try again. Keep repeating it until she stops spitting. It might take a few mealtimes.
Well I went and bought the 3rd stage foods yesterday and gave her a jar last night and she ate it all without spitting. I was so happy. The doctor told us to wait for the 3rd foods till she is a year but I think she wanted something thicker. I hope it continues to work.

A Little Bird and a Monkey Butt
1) She is not hungry
2) She thinks it is funny- you may have giggled or laughed the first time it happened
3) She doesn't like the food
