So, my mom and Libby are coming to Seattle with me next month for 10 days. I will be working 9-6 (most days, a couple will be until 8 pm) and we'll be staying in a major chain hotel downtown near Pike Place. We'll have a room with a King Sized bed (to share) and I plan to bring some toys, etc. that she can play with on the floor, which is her favorite thing to do right now.
What, around there, would also be good for her and my mom to do? They'll be on foot or public transportation (my company is providing shuttles to/from the convention center, so they can ride that as well). I think the aquarium is within walking distance. And I think the hotel swimming pool is indoor and heated and need to check if they allow babies, because that could be a fun activity for them.
What else would you recommend? Are there any nearby parks that would have swings (another thing she enjoys right now). Children's museum? I just want to make sure they're not cooped up in a dinky hotel room all day while I am at work. TIA!
Re: Seattle girls - things to do with an 8.5 mo old baby
10 days in Seattle is quite a while, although you are working it will be nice. I love the city almost as much as my own. You are right about the aquarium being down by the waterfront as is several stores/restaurants. If you and your Mom have a chance and enjoy seafood, check out Ivars (https://www.ivars.com/) down by the waterfront (they have a take-out window which we go to or a restaurant), it's our MUST visit when we are in Seattle. There is also a hotdog stand with great strawberry lemonade called Frankfurter. Oh and there is a carousel which Libby will perhaps be too young for but it might be neat to see? (we haven't been but I've heard of it) https://www.pier57seattle.com/carousel.html
Not sure what else would be child friendly in the area but I'm sure the local gals will chime in with ideas. Pike Place Market is a definite visit too, obviously

I haven't taken Jack anywhere for nearly that long, but he has come along to some work related trips (with DH in tow) and they by default had to hang out in the room mostly b/c my travel is often to casino resorts. - not much for kiddies to do - let alone babies.
So I pack a little bag of books and toys and then would put down a blanket and play. They would also go on long walks in the stroller. Perfect nap spot too.
As for Seattle stuff to do.... I'm sure she would love the aquarium on the waterfront. Jack loves the fish exhibits at our more local zoo. And Tara had a good idea re: the carousel. Jack loves to ride those. There is a childrens' museum at the Seattle Center. Not sure how much she would get out of it - I went there often with toddler age+ when I was a nanny. But they do probably have a few things to do for smaller kids. Along the same lines there is the Pacific Science Center also in Seattle Center - if she likes people/lights/action/bright colors she might like strolling around in there and your mom would enjoy it I'm sure.
Jack is such a people watcher that he loves simple trips to the mall so if Libby is like that I guess you could send your mom off to Nordstrom and Pacific place just to do laps for a while
They could stop at Barnes and Noble (Pacific Place) and read for a while - or check to see if they offer set story time events. Also check to see if the central library has story/music time? I haven't been in that huge downtown branch so I'm not sure if it is somewhere I would take a baby - but I do that near my home and would do it when I was a nanny but that would have been the seattle neighborhood branches....
There is also a zoo but that would depend on the weather and I'm not quite sure how to get there via public transport.
Thanks girls, I am grateful for your advice.
BTW, I am trying to see if can borrow some items locally rather than ship/haul them out there myself. Would you be willing or able or perhaps know someone who might be able to lend me some baby-related items? I am looking to borrow a stroller, a picnic blanket or quilt (preferably the waterproof backed kind), and some baby toys (we'll bring some smaller ones but Libby is really into pulling up/toddling so one of those push-type walkers/activity toys would be fun to have for her). PM me or email me at loridecter [at] yahoo [dot] com if you're interested in helping out...I'd promise to take good care of any loaned items and if something unfortunate were to happen I'd certainly pay to replace the item.

lots of great advice already, i don't have too much more to add. love the idea of storytime (the central library is huge! i love it - very interesting just to look at too - you and your mom might enjoy it as well, make sure to go up to the atrium, i've spent many hours writing performance reviews there. looks like they have baby story time W 12-12:30) the aquarium, and walking indoors. love the science center, but haven't ever been to the children's museum, so no advice there. science center is probably a bit old for libby right now.
note that pike place market can be *insanely* crowded on the weekends, so definitely go on the weekdays if possible - i would not be comfortable pushing a stroller or carrying a baby through those throngs of people for more than just a few minutes. when it's less crowded, you can take your time and stroll through, watch them toss fish, eat samples, and just enjoy the experience so much more.
also, if you head north by the water, you'll come across the olympic sculpture park, as well as myrtle edwards park - both nice places to take a walk, people watch, etc - very peaceful and quiet. i hope the weather is still nice then! we've already had some pretty rainy days, and rain in october is very common
so planning to stay mostly indoors might be safer.
I've never actually been to the zoo (sadly! it's been on my list forever) but friends with kids speak highly of it, and it looks like you can take a single bus from downtown and get to the entrance (directions)

sorry, I'm too far away.
not ideal (because it's $) but this is the first thing that came up in a google search https://www.happylittletraveler.com/products.html
my dad and step mom use to use something similar when traveling to Maui when my half sister was a baby.
and this one (has a ride on toy and walker and "packages").
I know it might be nice to have lots of toys but I bet libby and your mom could do ok with just a few books and some smaller toys - the infant room at daycare keeps 4-6 babies 1yr and under happy and entertained with out climb/walk toys. My bigger priority would be making sure you had a stoller. We don't use one that often but it really comes in handy - in more ways that you think.... I was just OOT for work and took Jack solo (dropped him off at my sister's before meetings), I didn't plan what might happen if he was awake when I needed to shower (we cosleep so I didn't have a crib). Ummmm, I took the quickest shower ever and put towels down on almost every surface of the bathroom floor and kept the curtain mostly open. UGH.
