Postpartum Depression

Introducing self

My name is Jenny and I have had a history of anxiety and depression but have always found ways to cope.  Through yoga, meditation and other religious/spiritual studies.  But since the birth of my daughter I can't get back on track.  It has been almost six weeks now and I feel just as sad, angry and anxious as before.  I went to OB but didn't want to just be put on medications, because I need to talk to someone. I go see a psychologist this Wednesday.  I finally got the courage to call and I holding myself to it and going.  Any advice on what to expect, ask or share at a first appointment?

Re: Introducing self

  • They will ask and want you to talk about everything that's going on right now, baby, DH, extended family, your thoughts, etc.

When I went they were trying to determine if the PPD that I was experiencing was situational (difficult baby, difficulties at home, etc.) or whether it could be purely hormonal in which case medication might be necessary.  I also had a history of depression worsened by a gluten allergy.

Through the therapist and testing they were able to determine that it was primarily hormonal and so we continued with the therapy as well as starting Celexa.

It made a big difference and when DD came along we were prepared and they tested my hormone levels first even though I still went to see the psychologist again.

Be honest when you talk to them and remember that they are there to help you.

  • Thank you so much for the advice.  I will use it tomorrow for sure.
