I am 39 weeks along. I got checked today and was told that I am 3cm dilated and 75% effaced, my midwife said that he could happen any day now. I decided that today we need to put the car seat in the car just in case.I figured it would be nice to share this moment with my boyfriend. MISTAKE. We chose not to get an infant car seat and went with a convertible one. It needs to be rear facing right? So he starts putting it in wrong and he then tells me that "my" way is incredibly unsafe. NO its not "my" way its how the manual says to install it for an infant. I want to use the latch system and seat belt. Well he could not put the latch tight enough. I could seriously pull the car seat up about 2in from the car.He decides to get himself all worked up about "my" method and says that our baby will die because theres nothing holding the back of the car seat down. Its some how going to bounce up and smash her into the back?! wtf oh and tells me that he was never put in a car seat rear facing..Does anyone remember being that young? I say hell with it then, I'll have someone install it for me. We go in the house..I tell him that it has to be rear facing because the hospital told me they send someone down with you when you leave to check for a car seat and to make sure its installed right. This is our convo....HIM: hahahahahahahahahahahahhahah no they don't, I saw a woman get into the front seat of the car with a baby and drove off. Me: ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! YOU WOULD BE OK IF YOUR BABY WASN'T IN A CAR SEAT THAT SECURELY HELD HER IN? what if we get into an accident?HIM: We wouldn't get into an accident cause daddy is a good driver.Me: Your an idiotHIM: People use a car seat because they don't trust their driving skills.Me: jaw dropped..and he comes over to give me a kiss while laughing..I punch him right in the gut. What a lovely story!!!! Now besides that, heres my question. How do you have your LO car seat? Using the latch system? Seat belt? both? Rear facing? What did you hear about the safety on rear facing compared to forward facing? BTW I am not changing how the car seat will be. it will be rear facing and with latch and seat belt method.
Re: Hey my bf is stupid..read this and tell me I am right.
You definitely want it rear facing. Hopefully he was just joking around and being a dork... I hope he wasn't serious.
I wanted to chime in to tell you though, you do NOT want to use BOTH latch and seatbelt. One or the other is fine. The carseats have not been tested with both in use, and it is not recommended. Use whichever one gives you the safest/tightest installation for your seat.
GL to you!
DH thought we should to latch and seat belt until he realized that it just wouldn't work right.. You can't get either one tight enough. LATCH is the safest as it latches to the frame of the car essentially.
DD will be rearfacing for as long as we can physically keep her that way, even if she's 3!
First of all, you need to get that checked by a CPST. An official person who has been through classes for days to be certified on car seat safety.
Second, the car seat HAS to be rear facing until at least 1 year AND 20 pounds.
Third, you CAN'T use both LATCH and the seatbelt.
Fourth, I don't know what convertible you have, but there are only a few that properly fit with a newborn. A Cosco Scenera, Graco MyRide, TrueFit, Radian 80 or XTSL, Combi Coccoro. And I can't think if there are any others.
The shoulder straps are usually too high for a newborn in any other convertible seat. The straps must be at or below their shoulders for rear facing (and at or above for forward facing).
The safety of your baby needs to be taken into consideration more so than who is winning an argument over it. You both need to go to the CPST check.
