Brians first day of work :long:

was not at all what we expected.

When he was offered the job we were under the impression that he would be working out of a local base (5 miles from home) getting a company car and traveling to and from locations but being home every evening. come to find out that there is no job at that location and the military union rep is going to "try" to get him based at base in Seattle (45 minutes from home) Not really a big deal but still not what we expected.

here is the kicker. we were told there would be SOME travel, as in a couple times a year traveling for 2 weeks at a time out of state from training and schooling. We were good with that. we could get my folks to watch tht ekids the extra hours and all would be fine. Turns out he may be traveling alot! like gone a whole week or more at a time. He could be gone a week at a time or 8 days at a time and then get either a couple days off to up to 6 days off. And not just a couple times a year. the way they made it sound it could be a couple times a month! While we could handle it its not our favorite idea.

Problem is if he is going to be gone that much there is no way I can get my folks or my sister to watch the kids 5 days a week 6-7 hours a night for $100. Thats the amount we were going to pay my sister to watch them for a few hours everyday for the overlap untill Brian gets home. I cant afford to pay more than that for sitting as I only make $300 a week. This job for him this job pays half of what he used to make in elevators (but there is no work there, he is still on the bench) and its not enough for me to stay home full time again.

We are back to thinking about selling the car (that money could make it easier for me to stay home, now that he is working try to refinance our mortgage, although our loan amount is more than our house is worth now. I was also thinking I could find a daytime job that pays what I made before I quit to SAH and then find daycare for the boys 5 days a week. But finding a job in this economy is tough and I dont know how long that will take and what if he starts traveling next week?

I called a few daycares today to get pricing and some info and I am going to go down to the jobsource tomorrow and find out about a job I saw posted. I guess we just wait and see and take it one step at a time.

I thought Brian getting a job was going to take the stress off but it turns out its making life more stressful! If he wasnt on his 2nd extension with no idea if the govt will extend again, I would tell him to stay unemployed but really we need the benefits and the extra cash.

Thanks for reading this far. I just have so many thoughts in my head right now I dont know what to do. Time to go refigure our budget yet again!

  • Oh Dawn, I'm so sorry!  You guys have been through so much.  I hope it gets better for you really, really soon.

  • I am so sorry things aren't working out as you had hoped!  I will keep your family in my prayers.  James is a union guy as well, and we went through the unemployment thing last year.  He also got a job part way through that was just a big time pain and he ended up not staying at.  I know how frustrating it is.

TTC #2 for a million years: SA normal, CD 23 bloodwork shows nothing amiss, ovulation detected. Next step: ? maybe CD3 bloodwork to check eggs? All out of pocket, so limited IF tests/treatments.
  • I'm so sorry!  I hope something can be worked out and that it ends up being more simple than it sounds right now.  What a bummer!

  • Oh that sucks.  My DH is a pipefitter, and new construction has been non-existent.  He has been out of work for a year and a half now.  We're just lucky that I have a good full-time job.  Otherwise we'd be screwed.

  • Hugs, mamma.  What did you do for work before you were a SAHM?  We have an opening at our office, but I'm in Seattle so the commute might suck for you.  Let me know if you want more info....

  • I am so sorry that you are dealing with more stress not less. It is a horrible feeling to feel that unsettled. Hopefully Brian will come home with some better news today. I hear about the refi on the house. I want to throw up every time I think of all the $$ we owe on ours and the fact it isn't worth what we paid for it now. It is a huge source of stress for us. Hang in there. There is always a creative way to do things. Maybe your family will be will to help you out more than you think. They must know you guys are trying and in a tight spot. Keep working on it and you'll find a solution. ((HUGS)) This grown-up business is hard sometimes!

  • Oh no Dawn! How disappointing for you guys! As far as daycares, it might be a little to far for you, but there is a church in LS that has really good rates and you pay by the hour. That might work in your favor I know it was going to be way cheaper for us. I LOVED their preschool program, I just didn't like their room that R would be in. It's LS Christian Academy. It's just off HWY 92 by sunny side elementary. I know you like to cake decorate.....would you like to do that professionally? I ask, since we might be hiring someone to work for a specific account in the Seattle area. There is traveling involved,(not as much as me though, if that makes you feel better). ;) it would be full time, but it's totally flexible since you don't have an office you go to. Would you be interested in knowing more?
