Finding a babysitter - need tips

It's time to find a sitter. I posted on my local AP board & didn't get a single response. I'm not very active in the group since most Meetups are during my working hours, but I figured I'd get something!

Anyway, any tips?

ETA: One thing - we need someone available during the day. So a student wouldn't work. This isn't going to be easy.

  • How picky are you? You could try the local La Leche League too ... or just ask a church youth minister to recommend a responsible teen! :D

  • i work at a university, and one of my student employees used to work with these people: https://www.sittercity.com/babysitters.html.

i think there are a bunch of finding services like this. i don't know if it would be possible to find an AP-minded sitter that way tho.

i had a similar no-response kind of response when i asked some area mommas about finding a sitter. one acquaintance told me that moms w/a great sitter don't want to share for risk of losing him/her :)

  • I heard good things about sittercity and I used care.com. They had a ton of people to chose from - moms, students, grandmothers. In putting up an add I would get 30 - 50 responses.  I would pick the ones I like an send an email if that looked promising I would then set up an interview.  I work at a local university but the websites are a good starting place.  You can also go to a local college career center or many have a job board.  I find that alot of students have a flexible schedules - only clases on some days or take night or internet classes.

  • I used SitterCity to find my sitter, but it is pretty pricey.  I think I'm going to cancel my membership soon and do what a previous poster suggested and find someone through a sorority mailing list.

  • We're in a college town and I used craigslist.  I asked for resumes, 3 references and for early childhood ed majors (one of the references needed to be a prof. so I could confirm).  I got maybe 15ish responses and weeded it down to 4 on just gut reaction and ability to follow directions in my original post.  I called references for my top gal and then we met at a coffee shop so I could watch her interact with M and "interview" her.  We ended up going with her and she's great.   We started just in the evenings but she's able to fill in during the day every once in a while (in fact she just left).
