I think our biggest waste of money was
1. baby furniture (other than the crib) - We bought a "set" with changing table (with 4 drawers) and another drawer (4 pull outs) set. I wish I would have just bought a nice big 6-8 chest of drawers and been done.
2. diaper pail - we never used it. We just bagged the diapers, and sent them out into the garage with the outside garbage. Easy peasy.
3. Clothing-palooza. If I had 5 bucks for every item of clothing Web's worn MAYBE 3 times, I'd have a million bucks! It's insane! Now I know! And for this next one, he/she'll be wearing boy clothes regardless!
Re: Looking back, what was the biggest WASTE of $$$?
The bouncy/vibrating seat. She hated it.
The on-the-go bottle warmer. It was wayyyyyy too slow to be of any use whatsoever.
Ours was crib set. I love them but you don't use 50% of the set. I wish I gad just bought nice sheets, curtains, etc.
And definitely the diaper pail.
bedding set--it's in a bag in our basement now.
Ergo---it just didn't work for us. I'm hoping I have better luck with the next one.
- changing pad covers
- swing, barely used it
The bedding set - We spent $200.00 on basically the sheet, and everything else is now folded in his closet.
The Pnp - We had planned for ds to sleep in the bassinet when he was newborn, and then use it on trips. By the time he came home from the nicu, we just moved him directly to his crib, and he has slept in it overnight exactly once at my mom's house. I wish we have never bought one.
Yes, this. We used the crib skirt, the sheet and the diaper stacker. I plan on selling the whole thing at a yard sale next year and for DD, I just bought a sheet and skirt separately.
DD #1 passed away in January 2011 at 14 days old due to congenital heart disease
DD#2 lost in January 2012 at 23 weeks due to anhydramnios caused by a placental abruption
-A Jeep walker...used once
-Bedding set...we use the sheet...LOL
- Travel system (we've only used it 5 times maybe)...but luckily it was a shower gift from family
- Diaper Genie (it worked for about 6 months before breaking)...now I know that it was never necessary in the first place
- Clothes (I just kept buying new things - I have tons of stuff he never once wore)
Swing. She used it for 20 minutes tops. She hated that thing.
And we have used our pack and play about 3 times.
Honestly, I can look through almost every single post above and count the things that everyone else says were useless as something that I found incredibly useful.
I think it all depends on the baby and the parents so I don't think I could ever give advice to another mom on what buy/not buy.
We would have died without the swing - in fact she STILL loves to swing.
I STILL use the changing table even though she's a toddler.
I adore the wipe warmer and diaper genie. They are both convenient and right next to the changing table.
Ditto pp, the travel system. Wish we would have just gotten a snap n go.
The swaddle me wraps- DS preferred receiving blankets.
The pacis- I tried probably 10 different brands/shapes, sizes, etc and DS never took one.
Sleep positioner- never used it once.
Newborn shoes- DS was born in May and barefoot or at the most in socks all summer and into the fall.
Highchair- could have used the booster from the get.
Strollers. Thankfully I was able to sell a couple of them on CL. I now have 1 that we love and use all the time.
Clothes - I do re-use a lot of stuff for DS2 from DS1 but now I am obsessed with having them match all the time so I still waste a lot of money on clothes.
Hats and shoes was a big waste. DS hated hats. He cried everytime I put on on his head. Shoes were a waste until he started walking.
Probably the Moby and Mei Tai. He hates inward facing, so the only time he allowed us to carry him was in the Bjorn. Luckily the two wasted carriers cost <$70 total and will resell decently (both in excellent condition).
Most things that would have been a waste, we borrowed from SIL rather than buying. Jumperoo, Bumbo, bassinet, travel swing, etc. I think the only thing we borrowed that I wouldn't have minded buying was the bouncy seat and even that he outgrew much faster than we expected.

we got use out of most everything we got..the one thing I wish I had done tho was only keep 1 of everything new and get the 2nd off craig's list...we could have returned the 2nd brand new items and used the $$ toward diapers/formula...since baby stuff doesn't get all that much use I wish we'd done that....
we never bought a bedding set, bottle warmer, sterilizer, etc. and I am glad...we did/do use our diaper genie tho...in the girls room...and I love it...
Definitely the bedding set----only thing we used was the bed skirt and the bumper for a little while. Cute set--but just not useful.
The bundle me thingy that goes over the carrier--i couldn't figure it out! LOL

Notes:
Arm's Reach Co-sleeper. DS refused to sleep in it and was in our bed from day one anyway.
Also I felt bad someone bought be the boppy off my registry because we never used it.
Since we got lucky and got most of our big stuff as hand-me-downs, we didn't waste to much moola
But the jump-a-roo was not a big hit. Never opened the wipe or bottle warmers.
And we got more receiving blankets than I can count or use.
I'm really glad we didn't go with the stroller combo thingy, we didn't even use the stroller till he was out of the carseat, since he was an August baby and it go cold.
He HATED both swings and jumpies; big expensive crib bedding set-i will learn for the next one that i dont need a comforter and a diaper stacker, etc; bottle warmer-it was garbage; bottles in general-he would never really take one and i bought tons of each kind...thats all i can think of right now, but im sure there is many more!

1) the $60 boppy i splurged on b/c it was "natural" and had neutral colors and was really soft. i have a long torso so i couldn't even use it.
2) bottles. i never used them. joshua only BF.
3) adorable train bumper from land of nod. it was on before he was born and then maybe 5 days of his life before i had mommy guilt overcome me and i took it off for good. i wish i could sew so i could turn it into something else.
4) jumperoo. he was so short that by the time he could stand in it, he was crawling and didn't want to use it.
ETA: along the lines of the bottles, the almost $300 medela pump. i used it maybe 3x and then decided it was too much of a hassle/time consuming, so i just BF, no bottles.
1. Sophie - DD hates it
2. Swing - DD hated it
3. Bouncy seat - DD hated it
My stroller. POS.
Wish we went with a snap 'n go then a light weight travel stroller. I have no need for such advanced shock absorbers. I have a need for something that folds.
We knew we were going to move from NM to WA when DD was 8 weeks so didn't buy furniture, just a bassinet. That would also have been a huge waste since she slept in our bed until she was too big for the bassinet, but those things are awesome changing tables- can't roll off! The rest of the furniture would have been a waste though.
Love: travel system, boppy, moby, bjorn, sling, bath pillow, swing, PnP (its her crib now)
Didn't use: baby shoes, pacis, bouncer, swaddle me wraps and OK I probably over bought on the clothes but they're so dang cute!
Bedding....the only thing that got used was the damn crib skirt. UGH. Such a waste.
