I've heard of post-pardum...

But has anyone had any depression during your pregnancy? I've dealt with it for quite awhile, and it runs in my family. In recent years it had been much better, and I had even been able to come off of medication (per doctors orders, not my own!). Recently however, the symptoms seem to have come back. I'm early in my second tri, and I feel like I've been dealing with this for about a month now. Anyone else? Any suggestions? I'm going to see my doctor this week, so we'll see what she says, but it's still frustrating to feel so down all the time. Especially with the joy that's on it's way!

  • I actually had to see my OB about this around week 10. I don't know what came over me. We tried for two years and finally sought the help of an RE to get pg so clearly we were ready for this and prepared. Around week 10 I felt like I lost my damn mind. I couldn't stop crying, I was having anxiety attacks, I was sure my marriage was going to fall apart, everytime H left the house I was convinced he was going to die. I could not get a grip.

    Eventually I think my hormones calmed down as I got farther into second trimester. Talking with H helped so much. Everynight he'd sit with me while I cried and shared all my fears and what was upsetting me that day. I didn't end up taking medication to get through it as the worst was already passing when I talked with my OB. Just hearing that it was normal and having H to help me through it made a huge difference.

  • I don't have an advice but I just wanted to say that I hope everything gets worked out once you see a doctor and hope the rest of your pregnancy is happy and healthy.

  • I have had some bouts of depression since about 10 weeks pregnancy and will be talking to my OB this week as well. 

    It is very off and on, back and forth. I know baby is coming and I should be extremely happy and am, but I'm not my usual self. It's like I'm able to realize I should be so excited and happy but I have been extremely sick and we moved across country away from family for husband's job which leaves me home alone all the time and well... I feel depressed. I too feel frustrated!!!


     

  • I seem to be feeling worse also.  I was also a medication refuser, and really tried other things to kind of keep my mood at a decent level.  However, lately, I feel like it is just ridiculous.  It also runs in my family, passed down from my Great-Grandmother, ever woman on my Mom's side of the family has had some type of issue with this.  I feel so down alllll the time, and don't want to do anything, see anybody etc...

    Keep your chin up though.  I have noticed that when I actually motivate myself to get outside and even just walk around my back yard, it seems to ease it a little bit.

    I hope your doctor has some good news as far as help is concerned.

  • I dont have any personal experience with this, but I do know it does happen.  and most likely bc of your hormone levels all over the place.  Talking with your doc is the best idea! they should have some good answers for you!

  • I'm right there with you.  Pregnancy throws my hormones out of whack, and thus my depression gets worse.  I don't medicate - basically I just trudge through (we can't afford therapy, and I feel that it isn't severe enough that I HAVE to go) - so I will be of no help to you on the "what to do" front, but I just wanted you to know that you aren't alone.  Pregnancy is a HUGE thing - it changes everything, and it is hard for me to deal with.  I have been feeling better lately, so I think I am through the worst of it, but I know that it can rear it's ugly head at any time.  Good luck, and I hope your doctor has some good info for you.

  • I had terrible post pardum with DS. It was very hormone related. Talk to your Dr, because I think I read that if you are surfering from a hormaone related depression during pregnancy, your chances are higher for suffering from pp. Best wishes, and know that you're not alone. They figure roughly 25% of women suffer from a mild to sever bout of pp, but a lot won't even realize it until after they are out of it. At least you are awear that you are just not feeling like yourself, it makes it easier to get help.

  • Definitely talk to your doctor about it.  I have been undergoing treatment for depression for the past couple years.  I was taking Lexapro but was switched over to Zoloft when I became pregnant.  My doctor is confident in Zoloft and has prescribed it to pregnant women for 10 years and has seen no poor side effects.  I have reacted very well to it and it has defitinitely helped me.  However, you still have to work at it - I see a therapist at least twice a month just to talk things out.  Eating healthy and getting exercise is part of it as well.  And sometimes, you just need a nap. :-)

  • Two weeks ago I was a teary, depressed mess. This week it's a little better. I plan on just trudging through and taking it week by week. The hormones can really play with you day to day! You are definitely not alone in this!

  • I have dealt with depression for some time prior to pregnancy, and since we were planning to get pregnant I had been off of depression medication for some time and was only taking an anti-anxiety pill as needed (maybe once a week) until we got pregnant.  Around 10 weeks I was having major problems dealing with anxiety and stress, so my doc put me on a low dose of buspiron.  It has helped.  I hope you and your doc can figure out the best course of action for you!  Good luck!!
