Healthy Snacks

My son is starting pre-school next week and they are promoting only healthy snacks.  My son loves bananas, strawberries, yogurt and apples.

I'm afraid if I peel and cut the apple it will turn brown by the time snack time comes around.  I was wondering if anyone had any other ideas of healthy snacks.  Would goldfish be a healthy snack?

 Thanks!

Re: Healthy Snacks

  • I send in my sons lunch strawberries and grapes - just cut up small enough for him.  You could do yogurt or string cheese as well.  My DS is also into an applesauce phase and I get the organic/natural kind with no added stuff in it.  You could do peaches or nectarines although I'm not sure how long those will be in season anymore, and my DS also loves cherries - I just cut the pit out.

  • whole grain goldfish
raisins; plain, choc covered or yogurt covered
cashews, pistachios, sunflower kernels (ds LOVES nuts)
gogurt (not sure how "healthy" it is..but ds LOVES it)
    orange slices
    melon
    pineapple
    carrot, pepper and cucumber sticks
    grapes
ds loves when i make him trail mix (i add the tiny little m&ms)
    cheese sticks

  • What about freeze-dried fruit? Trader Joes and even Costco have freeze-dried apples, pears, and strawberries!

  • I cut up apples in the morning and eat them throughout the day.  They do start to turn brown, but if you put them in the fridge, they keep fine.  You could put some of that fruit stuff on them if you are worried.

  • My sister told me a trick that keeps cut apples from turning brown - just put a little lemon juice on them (I've also done lime juice before when I didn't have any lemon) & they stay fresh. It works great, and I like the way it makes them taste (DD likes it too).

  • My DS gets snacks twice a day at daycare.  I send things like:  kiwi, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, cantelope balls, bananas, grapes, raisins, craisins, cut up peaches and plums, Kashi crackers, Kashi cereal bars, Chex, Cheerios, soy crisps, Newmans Own pretzels (with extra protein), whole wheat gold fish, yogurt, applesauce, cheese, avocado, zucchini bread, carrot muffins (the last two are when I am really energetic the previous weekend!)
  • If you buy the pre-cut apple slices from the grocery store they're so drenched in added vitamin c that they don't turn brown for a very long time.
