1st Trimester

Pregnant and Full-time School?

I'm currently in my senior year of Nursing school. I have not told anyone, beside 2 close classmates... I've not had any vomitting, just extreme nausea to the point where I can't concentrate in class. I had pregnancy brain terribly!! Is anyone a student fulltime. I also work one night shift a week and have workstudy. I'm exhausted!! My EDD and graduation are days apart... so hopefully I'll get to walk or ATLEAST get my RN!!

Re: Pregnant and Full-time School?

  • I am getting my DNP (doctorate of nursing practice) right now.  It's a full time program and, though I have the option to go to part time, I plan on staying FT.  You can do it.  I'm assuming you have a practicum to finish in your last semester?  Just be sure you try to get your hours done early so that you won't be working right up to your due date.  If you have an issue though, they may even let you walk without finishing your practicum.  Then you could just finish your hours and get your actual diploma when you are done.  They did this for one of my classmates who was pregnant.  Any way you can stop working your one night a week?  That might help lessen the load a bit.  GL...

  • I'm in the same boat. I am a 4th year medical student and am due the day I graduate. I haven't had much in the way of m/s and I hope it stays that way!

  • Thanks you guys...

I plan on getting my DNP too! Hopefully my school is willing to work with me. I do plan to do everything as soon a possible! Unfortunately I cant stop working my one shift a week just yet.. It's my foot in the door at a local hospital where I want to work after school. I will however work only once every 2 weeks if it gets to be a bit much!! Taking it a day at a time!

At least you're in the right place if you do!  In my DH's fellowship, one of the fellows had horrible hyperemesis gravidarum.  Everyday the nurses would hook her up to an IV, push zofran, and she would continue scoping (and sometimes puking).  Make nice with the nurses if you do.  They'll help.  :)

Probably smart.  Everyone talks about a nursing shortage, but that's bs in most places.  I heard that it took many graduates 4-6 months after graduation to find a job in the past year.  However, I think with the recession letting up a bit hiring freezes are coming off.  It's always good to have a foot in the door though.  Do you clerk?  Or are you a CNA?

That is definitely some good advice!  I am praying it doesn't come down to that :)

We're always willing to help the nice ones.  Now, be mean to me or tell me that I work for you (esp in an academic institution) and we won't get along so much.  But you are obviously not that type of med student.  What are thinking for your residency?

  • I'm a third year (last year) law student and I was lucky enough to be able to go part time this semester because I took so many credits the past two years. I did it just to have some free time but then found out I was pregnant so I guess it worked out for that as well. Even part time I am still taking 11 credits plus extracurricular and doing work study 10 hours a week. My EDD is also right around my graduation and finals. I haven't told any of my professors yet but I probably will next semester incase it interferes with classes/finals. I also plan on talking to the Dean of Students next semester to see about making a contingency plan should I go into labor during the two weeks of finals and have to miss any.

As far as nausea and school goes, it's horrible. I also find it hard to concentrate. I carry around saltines and ginger chews and gingerale around with me and it helps.

I absolutely hated L&D.  I don't know why.  I thought I made the biggest mistake going back to nursing school (I was a nutritionist/business manager before) until our last rotation where we went to the ICU.  That's where I fell in love and realized that I could be a nurse.  My DNP is also in Acute Care...I can't imagine doing anything else.  Good luck finishing your last year.  :)

Oh I am definitely not that medical student! I bend over backward to be nice to the nurses because they help me out and keep me from looking like a moron! I am applying for my pediatrics residency.

  • I am a full-time student studying to be an elementary teacher. I was suppose to go into my classes only for elementary teacher next semister. But I decided I don't know what third trimester is going to look like for me. I have RA so anything can happen. So taking easier classes that will help raise my gpa.

  • I'm a full-time pharmacy student and my classes start tomorrow. I am TERRIFIED of how classes are going to go while pg. I throw up intermittently throughout the day and with twins, I'm terrified that I'm going to go into labor during winter quarter exams which are halfway through March. The only bright spot is that I start rotations in spring and have 2 months off, which hopefully the school will give me in April and May, so I can have time to spend with the babies and recover before working full-time (at no pay, no less!). Hopefully I'll have 2 beautiful babies in my graduation pictures next year!

  • I'm also in nursing school full time, but I graduate in December and will finally be an RN!!! I'm not too worried about making it through the next 3 months, my classmates are great and so are my instructors. I am however nervous about getting hired while pregnant, but hopefully God will help me out with that!

  • I'm a medical student and my EDD is 3 days after my last final for the year is scheduled. I'm just hoping someone gets with the program and doesn't pull any surprises on me because I really don't want any exams hanging over my head! Luckily, I'm finishing up on a research component this year, so my course load is not as heavy and my summer should be free provided I finish my research project before the start of summer. I know of at least 1 person who has had their baby in either 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th yr, so I know it's doable at any stage in your medical education.

Knock on wood, I have not had many symptoms except for mild bloating, some fatigue, and frequent urination. I'm attributing my lack of m/s to a wonderful acupuncturist! (yes, I'm a firm believer in merging western and eastern medicine!) Keeping my fingers crossed for an uneventful and smooth pregnancy for all of us!
