i called my mom.  i wasn't aware that everyone on her side of the family is on cholesterol medicine.  yay.  so now i really have to lose weight.

  • That sucks.  I have two friends who are on meds for cholesterol.  I hope you can get your numbers down.

  • It may not even have to do with weight. My mom's side has horrible cholesterol, and I don't think it would matter if they weighed 100 lb or 500 lb. I'm creeping up, but hoping to keep it in check a while longer.

Hope you get it under control soon.

  • Cheerios claims to reduce cholesterol by 4% - yeah right!

  • In addition to Cheerios, oatmeal is supposed to help lower cholesterol too.  I eat it every morning with a little brown sugar and chopped walnuts.  Yum!

  • Oatmeal works best if you eat the good old plain stuff. Chances are with numbers that high you'll have to do meds though. H's mom is a stick and she is on cholesterol meds too.

And don't be blaming me for this...

  • Keep running! While it may not change the total number, it will absolutely improve the ratio which makes it heart protective!
  • blame it on genetics then. DH has been on meds for it for a few years. Didn't matter what he ate

  • That sucks!  Hopefully you won't have to be on the meds forever and that the numbers improve.

  • thanks ladies - i am blaming it on genetics for now.

doc wants me to check in 6 months from now and try to get my numbers down with diet and exercise.  if they haven't improved by then we have to start talking meds.

  • Yea, i'm at 221 last time I checked. I ditched the eggs for breakfast and eat oatmeal now. I need to get rechecked. My mom's family has high levels and she's been on lipitor for years. That's probably where i'm headed :-(

  • My cholesterol was high (and always has been thanks to genetics), but when I started eating "closer to the root" in preparation for IVF #3, it dropped like a rock. It is still high and probably always will be because of the genetics aspect, but I did my part in trying to fix it. I know that after I have the baby, the doctor is going to want to put me on meds to lower it more.

  • I've had high cholesterol for 10 years now.  My good/bad ratio is apparently good so I've never been medicated.

Warning - if it's genetic, losing weight may not help.   My chol. was 236.   I went on WW for 2 years.   Got down to my goal weight.   Was exercising all the time and eating super healthy (how I survived, I do not know)... got my chol. rechecked and it was still 236.    Seriously!!!???!!

  • Ditto on the genes. Most of my mom's side of the family is skinny (genes that skipped me Angry) but several are on cholesterol meds.

ugh.  how frustrating.  i guess even if my total # stays the same, if i can improve my ratio maybe i can avoid meds...
